Homer's epic poems got a blues interpretation when @uhoustonclass' Department of Modern and Classical Studies and @honorscollegeuh hosted singer-songwriter and classicist @joegoodkin for "Homer, Adaptation, and The Blues," a two-day engagement featuring a lecture and performance. Goodkin performed selections from his album, "The Blues of Achilles," inspired by Homer's "Iliad".

Publishing 25 to 30 titles a year, it brings Hispanic literature to mainstream audiences and is the oldest and most accomplished publisher of contemporary and recovered literature by US Hispanic authors. Years ago, Claudia Kirwald sat in a Bauer classroom as a UH undergraduate and Academic Achievers student. This week, she returned to sit with AAP students and share the journey that took her from the College of Business to studying abroad in Germany and at the University of Oxford, working at a Big Four firm, to NYU, and ultimately becoming Head of Marketing for the United Nations Global Compact.🌎💬

The roundtable was facilitated by Academic Achievers Program Coordinator Karen Zelaya, herself a graduate of Bauer’s Marketing program. Karen did an incredible job connecting Claudia’s experiences to the choices and opportunities our students are navigating today. Historians don’t just write about the past. They engage with the people who remember it.

This past summer, History PhD student Andrea Ledwell interned with The Heritage Society of Houston, an opportunity made possible through the generous support of CLASS and the UH Center for Public History. As a graduate student specializing in 20th-century U.S. history, the internship gave Ledwell the opportunity to engage directly with the people who carry history with them—to listen to their experiences, document their memories, and help preserve their stories for future generations:

“My main project was conducting oral history interviews with prominent Houstonians to help document and preserve the city’s rich past. One such interview was with Martha Whiting Goddard, the great-granddaughter of Reverend Jack Yates. Sitting down with her offered a firsthand perspective on the origins of Juneteenth- a history that felt especially powerful to hear directly from a family member rather than from the archives. The Heritage Society is dedicated to preserving historic buildings across Houston, including the original Jack Yates House located in Sam Houston Park, and to telling the stories of the diverse history of Houston.

This experience allowed me to grow my skills in ways that aligned with my research areas of interest. I constructed and conducted interviews that allowed people to share their stories openly, and I gained hands-on experience with the archival side of oral history, ensuring these vital conversations are properly preserved so future researchers, students, and community members can access them for years to come.

More than anything, this internship reminded me of why public history matters. Oral history work is proof that history is also something that people carry within them. Preserving firsthand testimony is urgent work, and I’m grateful to have played a part in making sure Houston’s history isn’t lost to time.” by @uhoustonclass

The first cohort of Undergraduate Fellows in Jewish Studies met last night for a delicious dinner. A group of top students from Jewish Studies-related courses at UH mingled with one another and faculty members and heard about Prof. Mark Goldberg's new research on Cuban Jewish immigration to Miami. Prof. Goldberg's project tackles issues of migration, exile, diaspora, and the intersection of Jewish and Latino/a identities.

There was even a special (furry) guest--Prof. Richard Armstrong's dog, Cocoa, who made not a peep but did seem to enjoy watching Prof. Goldberg present.
