When has a puddle ever held the ocean?

Do what you can with what you have

A phrase I picked up somewhere along my journey in academia

To me, that phrase has always been synonymous with making it work

Not realizing that this phrase is not only the furthest thing from making it work, but a phrase that would also teach me a lesson in love

It was not that she could not love me, because she has love in her heart
It was not that I did not fight hard enough, because I did more than enough

Sometimes someone can love you but still not have the capacity to hold you

I should have not asked

Am I Enough

Rather

What do I require?

I should have not questioned her love for me, but rather her space width and depth

I should have asked

Is there room for me here?

I had to accept that, yes, she does love me

But she
can only do
with what
she has

Love is not a problem that effort can solve

I was wrong to think that if I poured enough of myself into the puddle, that it too would become an ocean

I gave
and gave
and gave
and gave—

Only for the water overflow and evaporate

Do what you can with what you have does not mean keep pouring

Because love is not measured by how much water you are willing to lose
It is measured by whether two people can meet in waters of the same depth
By whether what you offer has somewhere to go

without squeezing
without overflowing
without minimizing yourself

Love can fill a space, but it cannot create a capacity that isn’t there

The puddle doesn’t become an ocean just because the ocean loves it
I poured and called the overflow a failure of the ocean when it was only the puddle showing me how much water it could hold

I was doing what I could because I had the capacity

But she—

she could only do what she could with the capacity in which she had

Her capacity was never an insult to my love
She didn’t need to become deeper to deserve love

Would you question the moon if it met the sun?

A moment where the heavens bent their own rules— just enough to make them touch?

You see,
the sun would introduce itself, but before the sun could finish, the moon would utter,

I know you

And the sun would question,

How so?

If we have never belonged to the same hour, never shared a morning or an evening, how could you possibly know me?

And it was because the moon knew the warmth of the sun
before ever feeling it

And soon, the sun would remember the light of the moon (1/4)

Isn’t that the funny thing about souls?

To recognize someone you have never known
To believe you are getting to know someone, only to feel as though
you
are
remembering them

To look into someone’s eyes and feel the strange familiarity of a place you have never been, but somehow feel you belong

To have a conversation, only to feel as though you have
bookmarked—
a page picking up exactly where you left off

But why
Why, after so long of passing one another from opposite ends of the sky, did the sun and the moon suddenly feel as though they had met before? (2/4)

And oddly enough, the sun enjoyed the inconvenience between its mind and its soul.

Because its mind kept insisting,

I have just met the moon

But its soul seemed far less impressed with the technicalities.

And this is why, so freely, the sun spoke as if it had been given a conversation it was supposed to remember,
and the moon listened as if, somehow, it had been waiting to hear it.

You see
the universe has never promised us that everything meaningful would arrive conveniently.
Or that it would even arrive within our lifetime (3/4)

So would you?
Would you tell the sun,

You came at the wrong time

Would you tell the moon

You should have waited

Or would you stand beneath the beauty of the universe’s decision to bend its own rules and simply wonder—

Maybe the universe didn’t make a mistake
Maybe
It made an exception
And if the universe broke its rules just to let the moon meet the sun
Who are we to question what happens next?

Perhaps timing was never meant to be a permission slip
