Thank you @picturebookmakers for showcasing my 4,25m long leporello “Mein langer Hund”/ “My unusual dog”!

I am also happy to share that this book was on the shortlist and nominated for the Hamburger Bilderbuchpreis 2025 by @neuesbilderbuch .

Can’t wait to bring this book to @bolognachildrensbookfair this spring and see all the other great projects, too!

There is always some light at the end of the dark. Sometimes all it takes to reach is a casual gravity defying walk, some handy wings and good company.

Rest in peace Yayoi Kusama!

Kusama was one of the first (east) asian artists I have encountered when I was young and started to take an interest in art. Mesmerized by her polka dot patterns I‘ve later found out that she suffered from optical hallucinations and painting them was her way to capture her visions. Growing up as a girl in rural post-war Japan and in a restrictive environment she has experienced multiple traumas, which have probably caused the mental health issues she has suffered from until her final days and shaped her artistic position. In finding expression in art she could turn her trauma and suffering in something fruitfull and fullfilling. Her numerous pumpkin paintings and objects covered in polka dots were a direct contrast to her phallic objects. I would like to think, that covering the phallic objects in familiar dots and embracing the fruit, the pumpkin, was her way to reclaim traumatic experiences and her place in the world as a female artist. She invites us to see the world with her eyes, literally mirroring it in her infinity rooms. A world full of patterns, repetition and overwhelming sensations.
Despite the admiration it must be said that she has attracted attention with racist remarks in her past but later on apologized for them.

She has spent her final years voluntarily in a mental institution and kept on engaging with her artistic practice until the very end - being her honest and unpretentious self.

How to carry a heavy rock:
1. Chose a rock that you can carry.
2. If the rock choses you proceed as said.
3. Pay attention to your posture.
4. Try to lower your knees while walking.
5. Don‘t pay attention to mocking birds.
6. Change the position of your rock from time to time.
7. Don‘t forget to eventually get rid of it.

How to get rid of a burden:
1. No clear instructions available.
2. Just try your best.

Rest in peace and freedom Marjane Satrapi.
Persepolis was one of the first graphic novels I‘ve ever read when I was a teenager. Watching the film adaptation made me realize that there is more to drawn animations than I have thought. Thank you for telling stories and having impact on so many lifes.
