Getting back to his roots. 🚜

Meet Owen Telecky, a senior studying agricultural systems management. He is originally from Ritzville, Washington, where he hopes to return and farm after graduating.

As a #UICALS student, Owen has taken a variety of courses that have shown him a well-rounded view of agriculture. His favorite CALS classes? Beginning Welding and Agricultural Shop Practices. Both of these courses are taught by his favorite professor, Marvin Heimgartner.

"Marvin is very understanding and explains everything in a way that we can understand," said Owen.

Outside of his classes, Owen participates in @uidahocyfr and @uidaho.sica.

"My favorite thing about CALS is being able to connect with a lot people and how much stuff they do for us students every year," he said.

Owen encourages prospective students to research potential degrees and see what is the best fit for them.

Happy National Farmers Day to Owen and each of our students involved in the farming community!

Gabrielle Feber is digging deep into a largely unexplored scientific frontier. 👀

By looking beneath the Earth’s surface, the #UICALS doctoral student aims to shed light on major questions affecting food production and the environment. This has lead her to explore how rising ambient temperatures affect the ability of deep soils to store carbon, a process that limits the flux of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Her work should also provide farmers with insights on how to adapt to changing soil conditions following multiyear droughts.

Gabrielle is part of the research team commissioning U of I’s unique, new @deepsoilecotron — a facility designed to enable scientists to study soils at greater depths than anywhere else in the world. The facility comprises 24 ecounits containing soil columns that are nearly 10 feet tall and more than 3 feet wide, with technology enabling researchers to manipulate factors such as climate, plant communities and soil types to better understand the impact of subsurface soils on ecosystems.

“Deep soil is really important, and it’s something that is really understudied,” said Gabrielle. “We know a lot about topsoil, but it’s unknown what happens as you go deeper.”

She’s been working on a multifaceted dissertation that includes:

• Specifying soil depths throughout the country
• Evaluating mechanisms associated with storing and releasing deep-soil carbon
• Analyzing water, carbon and nitrogen in deep soil samples dug from throughout Idaho
• Developing a model to understand the durability of carbon in deep soil in the face of changing conditions

After mapping the nation’s soils based on existing datasets, Gabrielle concluded the average U.S. soil extends to nearly 66 feet deep. Most soil studies, however, have gone less than 5 feet deep.

Way to dig deep, Gabrielle! 🪏

World Dairy Expo 🌍

The @ui_dairyclub recently traveled to Madison, Wisconsin to attend the World Dairy Expo. While there, the club watched dairy shows, attended educational sessions about the dairy industry, met with industry professionals and toured dairy facilities. The trip wouldn't be complete without some taste testing, though. The group made sure to eat lots of cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches and ice cream. 🍨

Way to take your #UICALS education beyond the classroom, Dairy Club!

A club where you get to make cookies? Sign us up. 🍪

Say hello #UICALS' FCCLA club. 👋 FCCLA stands for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and can be seen at the middle school, high school and collegiate level. Within the club, members are encouraged to explore paths in career areas such as nutrition, culinary arts, education, finance, and human services. Last month, that led members to baking cookies which looked, and tasted, delicious.

What are their club goals?

1️⃣ Serve the school and community through purpose-driven service learning
2️⃣ Travel to leadership conferences and meet fellow members across the country
3️⃣ Provide members with opportunities to grow in decision making and assuming responsibilities
4️⃣ Judge regional, state and national competitions
5️⃣ Mentor programs with students preparing for state conferences from the Palouse area

They also work directly with @frn_uidaho to reduce food waste across campus.

"This club is the perfect place to meet other motivated students and step away from classroom learning for the afternoon," said FCCLA Vice President Joanna Suewing.

We can't wait to see what all you accomplish this year, @uofidahofccla. If you ever need someone to sample a sweet treat, we've got a college that'd be happy to help out. Oh, and Happy National Homemade Cookies Day!

A #UICALS experience marked by leadership. 📣

Meet Kaydee Heitstuman, a junior from Uniontown studying agricultural science, communication and leadership. She also has minors in public relations and natural resources.

Driven by a desire to advocate and correct misconceptions in the industry, Kaydee has dove all-in with CALS. Her favorite classes include animal reproduction and breeding, genetics of livestock improvement and farm and agribusiness management.

"Each professor I've had has helped me learn just as much about myself as I did the class," she said. "Many of them have pushed me grow both professionally and personally."

Outside of the classroom, Kaydee is a CALS Ambassador, CALS Peer Leader, the @uicalsac Treasurer, President of the @womeninag_uofi club, Latah County Social Media Chair for @uidahocyfr and a member of the @vandal_catholic club.

Each of these experiences has allowed her to form a community on campus.

"CALS staff and students alike, have greatly enhanced my experience here at the U of I far beyond what I could have imagined," she said.

In her free time, you'll find her at @monicascoffeebar studying, hanging out with friends, or just taking a second to think.

"My advice to prospective students is to consider the opportunities for personal growth a school can give you," said Kaydee. "You want to pick a school that helps you become not just a better student or employee, but a better person. While it's important to grow professionally, it's just as important to grow personally."

Congratulations on an incredible Vandal jouney, Kaydee, have a great year!

Preparing to serve the next generation. 🏫

Today, students in the Introduction to Early Childhood Education course, taught by #UICALS Associate Professor Ling-Ling Tsao, got a glimpse into what it looks like to evaluate young children's development and learning progress. Each group was given an assessment tool to research and work with collaboratively.

While only one student went home with a drawing, all of them left with skills they can utilize throughout their future careers.

Way to put education into practice. 💪

A family tradition. 💛

Meet Lydia Love and Clyde Trupp. Lydia is a current #UICALS student studying global disease ecology. And, Clyde, he's a CALS alumnus that studied agricultural education and plant science before getting a doctoral degree in plant breeding from Iowa State University. Beyond being an alumnus, Clyde is Lydia's grandpa.

"I was drawn to the campus as my grandfather, grandmother, mother and now myself are all in attendance," Lydia said. "It is reassuring to feel that this campus took skilled care of them as people and students, and I will receive the same care."

Clyde started his journey with @uidaho in 1959 because of his ability to receive the Union Pacific Scholarship - worth $100 at the time. He never had less than 18 credits and worked two part-time jobs while in college. The salary? 85 cents an hour. His free time was spent working on an agronomy farm, participating in Intercollegiate Knights and being inducted into Alpha Zeta.

Although times are different now - Lydia also finds herself busy. She is a CALS Ambassador, active member in @idahoalphagam and participates in research. Her favorite memories so far? Tailgating with her sorority and meeting people as an ambassador.

After college, Clyde went on to work as an assistant professor at Michigan State University, an assistant sugar beet breeder for @amalsugarco and one of the founding staff members of American Crystal Sugar. He has also stayed connected to CALS' Parma Research and Extension Center.

"The friendships of fellow students and staff at the U of I have endured and cherished for all these years," he said.

Lydia is currently a sophomore but hopes to go into research advocacy after graduating.

Who knew two students 66 years apart would have such similar paths.

"I think it is super neat to hear the stories about buildings and landmarks on campus we both know and love, especially since we both came up through the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences," Lydia said. "While, ‘Back in my day…’ gets old, seeing this beautiful campus change over the years but continue to hold the same Vandal beauty is such a privilege."
