Some families pass down traditions. The Zayad family passed down a love for UIC.

When Yasmine Zayad BS ‘26 graduated this spring, she became the fifth sibling to earn a UIC degree, continuing a family legacy that began with their father, Zakaria, who attended UIC after immigrating to Chicago in 1985.

What happens when a UIC student turns a personal mission to serve Chicago into citywide policy change?

Rising Star Leadership Award honoree Matthew Swalek BA ’21 is helping lead Chicago’s first comprehensive reparations policy effort by examining historic harm to Black Chicagoans and developing recommendations for how city government can address those inequities through future policy and investment decisions.

From UIC to Mayor Brandon Johnson’s policy team, he now serves as director of community healing in Chicago’s Office of Equity and Racial Justice.
