Today we share one of the stories about the UIMLA assembly of 2024

"I still remember my first time attending the AGA in Macedonia. It was a great experience for me. I learned a lot about UIMLA and came to understand that we are part of a large and welcoming community. I also learned about the local culture and mountain environment, and I greatly enjoyed the culture dinner party and hiking activities after the AGA.

It was especially valuable to have the opportunity to talk with delegates from different member countries, exchange ideas, and learn about different perspectives and ways of thinking.

In Japan, we try to send a new person to the AGA each year so that they can bring their fresh experience back and share it with other Japanese IMLs. Every year, they report that it was a very valuable experience.". Haiyan Huang - Japanese delegate

An International Mountain Leader (IML) is a person that has been trained and assessed against the challenging requirements of UIMLA. These requirements are specified in a document called “A common platform standard”.

The IML qualification lets the holder lead groups in different mountains all over the world, where the skills and equipment of alpinism are not required. IMLs cannot provide tours on glaciers and permanent snow, and where the planned use of a rope is necessary. However, IMLs can work with groups on high altitude treks as well as lead groups on snowshoes.

IML’s, from every member country, have to maintain International Continuing Professional Development (ICPD) to ensure that members are kept up-to-date with the latest developments in mountain leadership.
Only a qualified International Mountain Leader has the badge and the carnet of The UIMLA organization

UIMLA is an international governing body which is representing International Mountain Leaders across the world. One of the most important targets for UIMLA is to represent the profession at the international level as well as setting equal standards of qualifications for all International Mountain Leaders (IMLs). UIMLA promotes the profession and supports the cooperation between IMLs from different countries.

We are happy to inform you that, over the past months, UIMLA Board and Technical Committee members have carried out visits to several countries on their path toward joining UIMLA.

These visits included meetings and field activities in Georgia (October) and Mexico (November), both Aspirant Member countries, as well as Portugal (December), the most recent country preparing to begin the affiliation process.

You can find a few highlights from these visits on our website (see in comments) with input from our Technical Head, Bill Bailey and Vice-President, Marian Anghel.

The Union of International Mountain Leader Associations (UIMLA) is proud to announce its official acceptance as an Affiliated Member of the United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism).

The decision was formally approved during the 124th Session of the UN Tourism Executive Council, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on 8 November 2025.

Through this affiliation, UIMLA gains formal recognition within the United Nations system as a key international actor in the field of mountain and adventure tourism.

Becoming part of the UN Tourism network will allow UIMLA to access valuable research, data, and collaborative opportunities for developing responsible mountain tourism.

Also, UIMLA can contribute to global tourism policies and sustainability initiatives, building strategic partnerships with public and private stakeholders.

One of the most important aspects for our members, this affiliation will consolidate the professional recognition of International Mountain Leaders (IMLs) worldwide.

After two full days of engaging workshops on diverse topics, today marks the start of the UIMLA General Assembly.

With representatives from over 25 countries in the room and more online, this gathering brings together the international mountain leader community to share ideas, strengthen collaboration, and plan for the future.

Recently, UIMLA took part in the Carpathian Convention Congress held in Brașov, Romania, represented by Vice-President Marian Anghel.

Six years ago, in November 2019 we held our annual General Assembly in the lovely city of Brasov, Transylvania, too.

During the meeting, UIMLA contributed valuable input on the topic of internationally recognized, cross-border qualifications for mountain leaders, as well as the presence of our professional member associations across the Carpathian Mountain Range — including the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania.

Currently, two Carpathian countries — Ukraine and Serbia — are not yet part of our Union, though we have established connections with Ukraine.

As an international professional body dedicated to mountain trekking, we are proud to contribute to intergovernmental efforts aimed at fostering the sustainable development of mountain communities worldwide.

Officially titled the Framework Convention on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians, the Carpathian Convention is a multilateral environmental agreement between the countries that share the Carpathian Mountains. The Convention was signed in 2003 in Kyiv, Ukraine, and entered into force in January 2006.

In addition to regular one-on-one discussions on key topics, the UIMLA Executive Board (BEx) holds at least one virtual meeting each month.
Yet, in-person meetings—though increasingly rare due to reasons such as cost and sustainability—remain by far the most productive and dynamic.

During an 8-hour marathon session in Brussels, the Board worked through a comprehensive agenda, covering everything from the upcoming General Assembly in November 2025 (Bulgaria) to long-term planning for the next two years.

The UIMLA BEx is responsible for the strategic leadership, governance, and development of the organization.
Its current members are:
Ian Spare (UK) – President
Marian Anghel (Romania) – Vice President
Danjiela Bucic (Croatia) – General Secretary
Esther Murciano (Spain) – Treasurer
Bill Bailey – Technical Director and the most experienced member of the BEx, with over 15 years of dedicated service!

The current team mandate runs until November 2027.
Until then, the Board will continue to guide the future of UIMLA and its growing global community of professional mountain leaders.

These days, the Executive Board of UIMLA is holding a working meeting in Brussels, Belgium.

The agenda includes a wide range of topics, from technical matters concerning aspirant countries and international relations with other global organizations, to internal rules and regulations updates.

Today, UIMLA counts 27 full member countries, 5 aspirant members, and 2 new candidate countries.
