From childhood days spent helping in her father’s laboratory to carving her own path in biomedical engineering, becoming a researcher at the University of Iowa came naturally for doctoral student Winter Philibert. The 2026 Dare to Discover honoree and Three Minute Thesis Honorable Mention now analyzes the physical properties of mucus and how the lungs clean themselves. Read her story at grad.uiowa.edu (link in our story & bio). Winter Philibert by @uiowabme

A glimpse inside Assistant Professor Xuan Mu’s lab:
Dr. Mu works with graduate students Reza Amouzandeh and Alvis Yu‑Wei Chen to transform silkworm cocoons into silk fibroin solutions for biofabrication. Their work includes 3D printing silk-based tissue scaffolds, using multi‑mode rheometry to assess mechanical properties, and leveraging plate readers and confocal microscopy to study cell responses and morphology. by @uiowabme

Advancing healthcare through imaging 🔬

The Bioimaging focus area is centered on how imaging technologies help us understand, diagnose, and study the human body. From foundational concepts to real-world applications, students gain insight into how images turn into impactful medical decisions.

Through specialized coursework and hands-on learning, this path prepares students for careers in imaging, research, and innovation.

Swipe to explore what bioimaging is, why it matters, what you’ll study, and where it can take you.

BME 6230 students and post-docs got a behind-the-scenes look at the world of MRI during a visit to GE HealthCare HQ in Waukesha, WI.

They learned how MRI technology is designed, built, and brought to market, while also exploring early career opportunities in the field.

With the MRI field rapidly growing, the future is full of opportunity 🚀

Thanks to GE HealthCare for hosting!

This year, a group of biomedical engineering students, led by Ben Peterson, helped take on a challenge with real‑world impact: modernizing how EMS professionals transport severed limbs.

The result? A fully prototyped Severed Limb Transportation Kit, designed through months of Biodesign work and multiple iterations. It streamlines a complicated, impractical EMS protocol into one fast, intuitive tool—built by students who want to change patient outcomes for the better.

The team will share their open‑source design at the Iowa Emergency Medical Services Annual Conference in November. Incredible work from our students continuing the legacy started by UI alum Adam Holmes and last year’s Severed Digit Kit.

A great example of Hawkeye engineers shaping the future!

Last Tuesday, Atif Qureshi, Ethan Ranft, and Julien Barsch attended the Design of Medical Devices (DMD) Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where they presented their senior design project.

Competing against 20 universities from across the country, the team was proud to place 3rd overall! 🔥

Their project focused on a feeding tube securement device for neonates, designed to improve stability, safety, and comfort for neonatal patients.

Incredible work on this achievement👏

Big congratulations to Devin Wong for receiving the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship!👏

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program is a competitive fellowship that supports graduate students who show potential to create meaningful scientific discovery through intellectual merit and broader societal impact. The fellowship provides a stipend and covers tuition costs for three of the five-year program.

Flatfoot is common, resulting in pain and instability that limit mobility. Custom in-shoe orthotics are a non-invasive treatment that aim to restore foot and ankle alignment. As a member of the Orthopedic Biomechanics Lab and the TIGER Team, Devin researches these orthoses, by understanding how they affect foot and ankle structure. The results will inform clinical decision making in the treatment of flatfoot.

Devin shared, "I am grateful to have been awarded this fellowship. I want to extend a special thank you to the TIGER Team (Don Anderson, Jason Wilken, and Bopha Chrea) who have been a wonderful support even before I joined the University of Iowa. Thank you to everyone who has encouraged my research journey thus far. I am eager to continue my research and contribute to the advancement of orthopedics."

We are extremely proud to celebrate this outstanding achievement, keep up the good work Devin!
