Hearty congratulations to Sarmad Chandio, and his co-authors Osama Khalid (PhD '24), Sharaf Zia, and Ethan Kutlu (@iowacsd) for their recent “Best Paper” 🥇 award at the ‘26 International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM). 🎉👏

This was one of 3 UIowa papers from CS and interdisciplinary researchers accepted for the conference, which focuses on social computing 💻🛜.

“What I particularly appreciate about the ICWSM conference is that it is interdisciplinary and presenters belong to a range of fields, such as, psychology, linguistics, HCI, journalism, and media studies. It’s an atmosphere conducive to holistic conversations,” says Chandio.

KUDOS to DeAndre Steger, Jason Li, and Frederick Schultz for showcasing their undergraduate research projects at the 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗼𝘄𝗮 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 (SURF).🙌

Congrats to UIowaCS grad Ju Li Khaw (08BA) who appeared in this month’s issue of Iowa Magazine🎉.

After graduating with a double major in art and CS, Ju Li went on to augment her skills in 3D animation and visual effects at the Vancouver Film School 🎞️.

She’s since been part of the animation team for several games, including Wolfenstein, Redfall, and Ghost of Yōtei (pictured) 🎮.

Ju Li always wanted to be an animator and is now living her dream! ✨

Ushna Malik, PhD candidate, presented at the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Computer-Human Interaction Conference in Barcelona.

She presented on her research paper titled “Prompting, Oversight, and Adoption: Physicians’ Use of Large Language Models for Diagnostic Reasoning in an LMIC.” The paper highlights the diverse prompting strategies from role assignment to cautious scaffolding, with consistent insistence on human oversight. Interviews reveal pragmatic enthusiasm for LLMs as a “second brain” in resource-constrained settings, tempered by skepticism about reliability, privacy, and patient trust.
