To Build Elsewhere - Honours Exhibition at the FADA Gallery

🗓️When? 12 November 17:30 for 18:00
🏢 Where? FADA Gallery, UJ Bunting Road Campus
🍷🍷🍷Wine? For all

Don't miss out! Be there 💯

To Build Elsewhere is a bold exploration into the generative power of redefinition. The exhibition presents a unified body of work from the Visual art Honours students; that rejects fixed boundaries, instead viewing existence—whether personal, social, or environmental—as a perpetual act of construction and imaginative re-mapping. It is an acknowledgment that to move forward, one must first challenge the ground they stand on.

The artists collectively engage in a profound form of conceptual cartography. Their practice navigates the complex conditions of visibility and omission in systemic spaces, using principles of framing and reflection to critique what is preserved, overlooked, or deliberately withheld from public view. This critical eye extends to the architecture of memory, where personal and ancestral histories are re-imagined as provisional and playful reconstructions, rather than static archives.

Crucially, the exhibition confronts the social and ethical frameworks that necessitate building "elsewhere." The works directly address the objectification and fragmentation of the body, particularly when forced into confining societal expectations and stereotypes. This critique is balanced by a powerful impulse toward reclamation, as the artists interrogate ancestral presences and seek to re-establish identity outside restrictive roles.

Overall, To Build Elsewhere is a vision for a future founded on transformative change. The collection embraces the idea that absence, erosion, and structural shifts are not losses, but generative forces that facilitiate healing and new creation. taken in UJ FADA by @ujdova

2025 Master’s Exhibitions | FADA Gallery, University of Johannesburg

This October, the FADA Gallery proudly presents two solo Master’s exhibitions by University of Johannesburg FADA Master’s students in the Department of Visual Art, Leonardo Sitoe and Lonwabo Mzamo. Both artists are recipients of a grantholder-linked NRF scholarship under the SARChI Chair in South African Art and Visual Culture, reflecting the depth of research-driven practice emerging from UJ.

Ko Lorha (To Dream) — Solo exhibition by Leonardo Sitoe

Sitoe reflects on dreaming as both metaphor and method. A realm where memory, history, and the surreal dimensions of the diasporic experience converge. Working primarily with wood, he draws on Afro-Surrealism to transform material memory into acts of reclamation, envisioning futures shaped by renewal and resistance.

UMCIMBI (Social Cultural Gathering) — Solo exhibition by Lonwabo Mzamo

Mzamo invites audiences into a space of reflection on masculinity, ritual, and identity within isiXhosa cultural traditions. Through painting, mixed media, and installation, he reimagines cultural knowledge systems and masculinity as fluid, evolving, and rooted in shared experience.

Exhibition Dates: 25 October – 3 November 2025
Opening Reception: 25 October 2025 | 11:00 AM
Venue: FADA Gallery, University of Johannesburg

Together, Ko Lorha (To Dream) and UMCIMBI (Social Cultural Gathering) invite us to dream, reflect, and reimagine — revealing how art can hold memory, ritual, and transformation in dialogue.
