The wild duck had her babies. She made her nest with the dried lemongrass from the raised bed and downy feathers. You can see a few of the cracked eggs left. She was comfortable and we saw more of her. They headed back to #southlawetlandspark. We felt this goodbye. Next year.

Sharing space. This is the fourth year that the wild duck has chosen our garden to lay her eggs. We are guessing that she has travelled down from the South LA Wetlands. Her favorite spot is under the spray of lemongrass. Our students and teachers love that she is on campus.

FRIDAYS WITH FORDIE!

Big welcome to Principal Fordham (black t and shades). We are a Community School this year. It makes formal what Hawkins has always done in practice. Our community is our strength. Where community is united...schools will thrive. How many students get to be a part of hiring their Principal? Our students are a valued part of the stakeholder base who drive decisions at Hawkins. That is the structure that we must oversee to ensure the vision is put into practice. Students, teachers, parents, and admin.

Speaking of parents at the center, meet Kelly Bedford (middle). Parent, advocate, visionary.

We supported our Hawk 🏈 team in their first scrimmage game this Friday. 14-0. Hawk win. Both teams were all heart.

We are because, WE ARE! As we welcome students back to online learning this Monday help us support them.

And so it begins... The People's Seed Library at Hawkins Green. This has come about with so much love. @findingwildla dropped the seed. @theofficialoriana will mentor our student garden club this year. Our Aut class will transform and repurpose this as they will. Praises Cindy and @afrika_47 for your generosity and support in gifting this newstand to us. So many gardens will reap what you have sown. It will be a way for our students and community of growers to receive free seeds and/or drop seeds off. Blessings from seed time to harvest. Stay tuned! 💚🌿🙏🏿

We have a wild duck that is using our raised tea bed. She and her eight beautiful eggs are nestled comfortably under a spray of lemongrass. We discovered them yesterday. Gratitude. Our school garden at the busy intersection of 60th and Hoover in South Central, LA is a safe haven...a wildlife habitat.

Our students are excited. They have created this space. We planted milkweed to support the Monarch Butterflies. They documented that cycle. They have come to understand the importance of our bees and other pollinators. Our garden attracts a variety of birds. But this latest discovery...we support all mamas!
