The Scarpa Crux is a longstanding favourite amongst staff at UKC. Back in 2015 it won Best in Test in our Approach Shoe Group Test and in the intervening 11 years, in spite of a great many other models being released, it has retained its popularity and status.

The Crux 2 succeeds in modernising the original - and improving upon it - whilst retaining the same core identity. In short: if you liked the original, you’ll love this. If you had reservations, then the refinements might make its successor more relevant.

Having relocated to Scotland himself many years ago, Masa Sakano selects 200(ish) routes worth making the trip for, covering classics with stellar reputations, hidden gems, and ‘rescue routes’ - still excellent in their own right - for when the classics are wet. Get those spring/summer 2027 plans started...

Point Five Gully (V 5) and Centurion (HVS 5a); the former a grade V ice route and the latter an HVS rock climb, are two of Ben Nevis’s most famous routes.

Climbing them both in a day must be one of the UK’s finest climbing linkups. It is not just the quality and length of the routes individually, but also their generally mutually exclusive styles - summer and winter in a day - that makes this both an unusual and satisfying combination.

The trickiest bit of the whole endeavour is probably not the climbing itself but getting both routes in a suitable condition.
