The Omigugui (Great Buddha Dusting Ceremony) at Todaiji Temple is an annual event in which around 180 people work together to gently remove a year’s worth of dust from the Great Buddha. Using giant feather dusters attached to bamboo poles about 7 meters (23 feet) long, they carefully clean the statue with great respect and devotion. Filled with gratitude and prayers for the Great Buddha, this traditional ceremony marks the arrival of summer in Nara. As dusk falls, lanterns lined up in front of the Dining Hall are lit one by one, creating a beautiful lantern illumination known as “Mantō-e.” The temple grounds, softly illuminated by the warm glow of the lanterns, take on a magical atmosphere that feels completely different from the daytime. A prayer that has been passed down through centuries of history, and the beautiful lights spreading across the autumn night.
