Knots, Hitches, Bends, Bights…What’s the Difference?

For the landlubber, there probably isn’t any difference between the three. They probably all refer to any one of the three as a “knot.” But for the nautically inclined, there clearly is a difference. The terminology isn’t shaped by the actual choreography in a piece of line, but rather the function. It’s really pretty simple once one understands.

A Knot is ropework that fastens or ties a piece of line to itself to create a loop or a lump.

A Hitch is ropework that fastens or ties a rope to an object like a post, a spar, or a pole.

A Bend is a fastening that joins two ropes together (or two ends of rope) into one longer line.

Big Breeze, Big Stakes on the Wannsee! 🇩🇪💨

The second to last matchday of the 2026 Deutsche Segel-Bundesliga was sailed at the Potsdamer Yacht Club last month, and the Wannsee threw everything it had at the fleet. After two days of light, notoriously shifty breeze, Sunday delivered gusts of up to 26 knots, and the teams had to switch gears fast.

In the 1st Bundesliga, the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein showed the stronger nerves in a tight duel with the local favourites, the Berliner Yacht Club, to take the win, backing up their home victory in Hamburg. The Berliner Yacht Club claimed a well earned second, with the Joersfelder Segel-Club third after a consistent series.

In the 2nd Bundesliga, the Akademischer SegelVerein Warnemünde led from early on and never let go. Behind them, the Flensburger Segel-Club and the Segel-Club Ville handled Sunday’s building breeze best and charged onto the podium.

All eyes now turn to the season finale, back on the Wannsee later this week from October 15 to 17 at the Verein Seglerhaus am Wannsee, where the 2026 titles will be decided.

UK Sailmakers Germany is proud to be the official sailmaker of the Deutsche Segel-Bundesliga, supplying the J/70 one-design sails that keep the racing all about skill, strategy and teamwork, in light air or a full blow. Congratulations to every team, and thank you to the Potsdamer Yacht Club, the officials and the volunteers for a fantastic weekend.

For many years, UK Sailmakers has been a sponsor of the Storm Trysail Club’s Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta.

This unique event brought 47 collegiate teams to Larchmont this past weekend to sail seven races. The key difference is that they weren’t sailing their usual dinghies; they were sailing keelboats loaned by STC members and friends.

In this episode of Lessons Learned, we hear from Matt Gallagher, STC Rear Commodore and head of the IOR series, which now includes the Great Lakes, Long Island Sound, and, new this year, the Pacific Northwest/Seattle.

The mission of the IOR series is to give these sailors a pathway from dinghies to big boats so they can continue their love of sailing after graduation.

330 Miles from the Next Start Line

After 9,527 miles at sea, Belgian sailor Quentin Debois came up just short of his goal of holding both transatlantic records for a single-handed boat under 7 meters. Along the way he set the east-to-west record from Cadiz, Spain, to the Bahamas and established a new Miami to New York benchmark. He completed the crossing to the Lizard, but shifting weather and a string of mechanical setbacks meant he finished a few days too late to claim the west-to-east record.

He gave it everything to the end, and he's already planning his next adventure. Read the full story of Quentin's journey in the news section of the UK Sailmakers website.

Skin in the game on San Francisco Bay

The 62nd Rolex Big Boat Series doubled as the 2026 ORC North American Championship this year: 81 boats, around 700 sailors, a distance race out the Gate, and classic Bay breeze all weekend.

Two of our loft owners weren't watching from the shore. They were on the startline in ORC B:

🥈 Sylvain Barrielle of UK Sailmakers San Francisco sailed aboard Shepard Kett's Santa Cruz 50 Octavia, posting a 2, 3, 2, 2, 2 to take silver and second place in ORC North American Class B.

⛵ Brendan Huffman of @uksailmakerslosangeles raced aboard Aaron Wangenheim's Santa Cruz 52 City Lights, finishing 5th in a the competitive fleet.

And the UK Sailmakers sails on the Bay covered a century of design:
• Farr 400 Astra, 4th in ORC B on a full set of Titanium sails
• Beneteau First 30 Final Final, 5th in ORC D
• 1924 ketch Hurrica V, 4th in the Classics division

Our lofts are owned by sailors, not just salespeople. When you call your local loft, you're talking to someone who sails the same tides and breeze you do.

Congratulations to all the teams, and thank you to St. Francis Yacht Club for another outstanding regatta. 👏

Swan 45 Katima on the podium at the Rolex Swan Cup 2026!

Congratulations to Jan Opländer and Team Katima, who finished 3rd overall in the Cruiser Racer class at the Rolex Swan Cup in Porto Cervo. 🥉

This year's edition marked 60 years of Nautor Swan and drew a record-breaking fleet of 170 yachts to the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Katima put together a consistent 4-10-7-5 scoreline across four races to finish on 26 points in a competitive 27-boat ORC fleet.

Jan Opländer is no stranger to Porto Cervo success. In 2024, Jan's Swan 54 Katima won Division C with a perfect 1-1-1 scoreline. The Swan 45 has also proven herself at the ORC Worlds in Kiel, sailing with a mostly Corinthian crew against pro-crewed TP52s.

Both Swans are powered by UK Sailmakers, with a Titanium upwind inventory and Matrix spinnakers developed with Stefan Voss at UK Sailmakers Germany.

Well sailed, Katima! 👏
