📣 We are thrilled to announce the new Co-Chairs & Program Director for the University of Montana School of Physical Therapy! 📣

Our very own Dr. Sue Ostertag and Dr. Ryan Mizner have joined forces, and they are so excited to take on this leadership role, as well as support our students, staff, faculty, and drive the mission and vision of UMPT. They are replacing Dr. Brueilly who announced his decision this summer to step away from leadership and return to a faculty role.

Dr. Ostertag has been with UMPT for almost 20 years and has served in a multitude of roles including Director of Clinical Education, Director of the Montana Geriatric Education Center, Director of the UMPT Clinical Services, and instructor across various courses (not limited to) neurological rehabilitation, geriatrics, clinical reasoning, and the importance and role of the interprofessional healthcare team.

Dr. Mizner has been with UMPT for 15 years and has served as Director, Program Chair, and primary instructor in foundational courses including biomechanics, electro, and multiple musculoskeletal courses. Dr. Mizner is also a seasoned clinical scientist, with over 100 peer-reviewed national presentations and 40 publications index on PubMed that have been cited nearly 6000 times during his career.

Both of our chairs bring a wealth of knowledge, expertise, and passion to the program and we are SO excited to be moving forward under their leadership! by @um_physicaltherapy

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Maria Iles, PT, DPT, CLT-LANA, to the UMPT faculty! As a UMPT alumna and former adjunct professor, Dr. Iles is no stranger to our program. We are excited to welcome her back as Assistant Professor and Associate Director of Clinical Education and look forward to the impact she will have on our students and program.

Dr. Julia Mazzarella (Site PI) received funding from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute for Child Health and Human Development. In collaboration with Dr. Rachel Bican (PI) from Ohio University, the study focuses on caregivers of young children with motor delays in rural communities. Congratulations, Dr. Mazzarella!

Congratulations to our very own student, Emmy Sundby, for being recognized by the University of Montana's Alumni Association 25 Under 25 program. She was chosen as an awardee for her excellence and community impact. We're so proud of you, Emmy!

UMAA wrote the following dedication:

Emmy Sundby graduated from UM with a degree in health and human performance while competing on the Griz women’s golf team. Following graduation, she took a gap year to pursue semi-professional golf and earned her Titleist Performance Institute Level 1 certification while applying to physical therapy programs. She is currently completing her third year in UM’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program and serves as a graduate assistant and assistant coach for the Griz women’s golf team. Sundby values the opportunity to give back to a program that helped shape both her academic and athletic journey. After earning her doctorate, she plans to remain in Missoula and support the health, performance and long-term well-being of golfers throughout the community.
