Thank you to everyone who came out to my intermediate, beginner friendly, adult class in Santa Cruz with Motion Pacific on their rotating hip-hop teacher series!

I am teaching again you guys this Wednesday from 8:30 to 9:30 pm for three weeks only at the Tannery in Santa Cruz! More details will be posted on my story! My last classes! Show up!

I wanna give a big thank you to Motion Pacific’s team and @ltkorth for inviting me on and bringing different teachers forward to bring more awareness of hip-hop dance and its culture to our sc community! In class, I focused much on diving into musicality, commercial choreography, as you see above in this post, but also the history behind popping as a street dance funk style, and how it differs from what we know as “hip-hop”. We dove into waving, tutting and some hip hop party moves. In addition, how the word hip-hop has been altered by the media and much more to blend different styles that have different origins and combine them together, while using the word as an unknown umbrella term that may be confusing to beginners starting out. In addition, the knowledge I share has been passed down from my mentor, as his knowledge was passed down to me from his own, that being the pioneers of popping. I share this to help us understand better what we’re practicing and honor the history. It’s important to listen to pioneers of these different kinds of street dance styles to expand our knowledge. As I’m always still learning more and expanding my knowledge, it’s important that we spread a baseline awareness to our communities so that we don’t mix up each styles unique history, culture and origin.

Once again, you all killed it and I hope to see you there this Wednesday at the Tannery for my last few classes in Santa Cruz before moving away! Thank you so much!

I do not own the rights to any of the music used. For entertainment purposes only.

🌴 Rotating Intermediate Hip Hop with Uma starts THIS Thursday! 🌴

@uma.batish has studied the funk styles of popping and locking, alongside waving and freestyling under her mentor, the OG @dancewithceech 🙌 In 2025, she joined @syndicatedance to train and compete, as well as @twdcc_dance teaching hip hop. She’s currently pursuing her education at UCLA, and is very excited to bring hip-hop dance and love to the Motion Pacific rotating class.

Uma will be teaching 7-8pm Thursdays at @londonnelsoncenter on 7/2, 7/9, 7/16, & 7/23 ✨

👉 Attending all 4 classes is recommended but not required!

Sign up on Mindbody and pre-registration is HIGHLY encouraged! by @uma.batish

Grateful for all the love and support🙏🏽

- my send off piece to a new chapter, merging popping and contemporary to push my performance🫶🏽

🎵 for the Piece: Let it Happen By: Tame Impala

📸: Crystal Birns

This piece was created to replicate a feeling of struggle in those who surround you and your environment. Whether it be about racism, inequality through gender, or socially. It was an amazing feeling to be able to perform it for so many eyes but it was really made for those who have felt any similar feeling to be captivated by emotion through what they saw on stage. 💙 by @uma.batish

Ooohhh, our next week’s choreographer will be none other than @uma.batish !!!

Get to know Uma:
Uma Batish is a passionate hip-hop dancer who is primarily self-trained, with additional training at Bay Area studios including The Tannery World Dance & Culture Center, Pacific Arts Complex, Motion Pacific Dance, On One Studios, Young Reach Studios, and City Dance Studios. She has trained in popping and locking under her mentor, Ceech Hsu, a respected Bay Area hip-hop instructor who was trained directly by the pioneers and influential figures of the style such as Popin’ Pete, Skeeter Rabbit, Gary Kendell, and The Electric Boogaloos. Uma teaches hip-hop for ages 13–19 at The Tannery World Dance & Culture Center, where she serves as a Teaching Artist and is a member of the 2025–2026 Youth Faculty. She is currently training on Syndicate season 10. Alongside dance, Uma is also a singer-songwriter who collaborates with her sister, Neha Batish, an emerging producer majoring in Music Industry at UCLA. Growing up in Santa Cruz, California, in a musical family, they developed a deep love for the arts through their father, Ashwin Batish, a renowned sitarist, tabla player, composer, and music lecturer at UCSC.

Note before Workshop:
I am so grateful for the opportunity to dance with you all and to share this space together. My intention is to create an environment rooted in love and positivity. My style usually merges hip-hop with jazz funk influences and foundational funk styles. There is no pressure to be perfect in this class — I encourage you to move like yourself and to simply have fun. Thank you for sharing your love of dance with me. 💛

Class difficulty: Intermediate/Advanced**

Reminder:
- WORKSHOP IS FREE.99
- EVERYONE IS WELCOME (sjsu students + non-students)
