Grants up to $25,000/year for tuition, room, board, childcare, travel, learning materials

Ongoing Commitments:

Attend educational requirements (seminars, webinars, conferences, clinical hours, etc.)
Maintain strong academic standing
Complete surveys and data requests for up to one year after graduation

The University of Maine’s undergraduate nursing program climbed 41 places in the latest U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings, breaking into the top 100 programs nationwide.

Celebrating excellence in nursing and having a lot of fun while doing it!

The UMaine School of Nursing team had so much fun celebrating our award-winning faculty members, Sarah Hanscome and Eva Quirion, at the ANA-Maine Annual Awards Soirée.

We are deeply grateful for the faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, and community partners who bring our mission to life each day. Together, we are humanizing healthcare and preparing the next generation of nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse scientists, and nursing leaders.

Thank you to ANA-Maine for recognizing excellence across Maine’s nursing community and to Orono Brewing Company, founded by proud UMaine alumni, for hosting the event.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Eva Quirion, Ph.D., APRN, FNP-C, recipient of the Sister Consuela White Spirit of Nursing Award at the American Nurses Association–Maine awards ceremony!
As a lecturer in the University of Maine School of Nursing and a family nurse practitioner at St. Joseph Healthcare specializing in chronic pain and addiction, Dr. Quirion exemplifies nursing grounded in empathy, dignity, and collaborative leadership. She has expanded access to compassionate addiction treatment, reduced barriers to timely care, and created clinical learning experiences that prepare nursing students to serve vulnerable populations without judgment.
Whether supporting an individual through recovery, mentoring the next generation of nurses, or bringing healthcare partners together to improve systems of care, Dr. Quirion listens deeply, embraces complexity, and leads with both expertise and heart.
The Sister Consuela White Spirit of Nursing Award honors nurses who embody the belief that “love is the most healing thing of all.” Dr. Quirion brings that spirit to her patients, students, colleagues, and communities every day.

Congratulations to Sarah Hanscome, who was recognized as one of Maine’s Top 10 Extraordinary Nurses at the American Nurses Association–Maine Annual Awards Ceremony!

Sarah serves Maine’s nursing community in two essential roles: as a staff and charge nurse at Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Hospital and as a lecturer at the University of Maine School of Nursing. By remaining actively engaged in rural clinical practice, Sarah brings current, real-world clinical experience into the classroom and prepares future nurses to provide safe, high-quality, evidence-based care.

Across classroom, laboratory, simulation, and clinical settings, Sarah creates learning environments grounded in compassion, inclusion, accountability, and high expectations. She is an extraordinarily gifted nurse educator, a dedicated clinician, and a deeply valued member of the UMaine Nursing community.

At the UMaine School of Nursing, no student should have to navigate the transition to college and nursing school alone. 💙

This year, we expanded our commitment to students’ academic, emotional, and social well-being by hiring six peer mentors for our first-year nursing students. Each mentor is assigned to a small section of NUR 150: The Science of Wellness and Mindfulness and NUR 101: Introduction to Nursing and College.

They will also host weekly student hours in our Wellness Room, offering support with everything from Brightspace and time management to navigating conflict, managing stress, and finding a sense of belonging.

These students remember what it feels like to be new, uncertain, and overwhelmed. Now, they are ready to help the next generation of nursing students find their footing and flourish.
