In the morning, she broke national swimming records. In the afternoon, she studied antifungal resistance in a microbiology lab.Kelsey Wog [BSc(Agr)/22, MSc/26] has represented Canada at two Olympic Games—Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024—and holds the Canadian record in the 100-metre breaststroke, all while earning 16 U SPORTS gold medals and maintaining Academic All-Canadian standing. Having recently completed her Master of Science at UM, she continues to give back through coaching and her leadership role with Swim Manitoba. From UM's School of Art to the National Portrait Gallery. Joel Nichols [BFA Honours' 23] has received international recognition as the recipient of the Young Artist Award at the 2026 Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer Portrait Award, presented by the National Portrait Gallery in London, England.The annual competition celebrates excellence in contemporary portraiture and is one of the world's leading portrait awards. Nichols received the award for the large-scale oil painting 'In Our Borderlands'.The honour marks another milestone for Nichols, who became UM's 100th Rhodes Scholar and the first Rhodes Scholar from the School of Art in 2023. Congratulations to two UM alum, Desiree Scott [BA/2016] and Christina Litz [BA/94, LLB/97] for inspiring the next generation of women's soccer players in Canada. The two are bringing a Northern Super League franchise team to Winnipeg which will start playing next fall. Desiree Scott is an Olympic gold medalist who played on the UM Bisons soccer team between 2005 and 2009. Christina Litz is the President of Canada's first women's pro soccer league, the Northern Super League. We love seeing two powerful Bison women working together to bring another professional team to our city. #HornsUp by @umanitoba

Honey bees may be best known for making honey, but they also play a vital role in Canadian agriculture, acting as pollinators for important crops like hybrid canola, sunflowers and berries. However, disease and environmental stressors are putting them at risk.The UM Honey Bee Lab is teaming up with local honey bee farmers to help protect bee populations.Dr. Nuria Morfin, assistant professor in entomology in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, has been awarded a new Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Discovery Grant to study how stressors interact and affect honey bee health and productivity.
