HISTORICAL MOMENT: MUAMMAR GADDAFI’S CONTROVERSIAL VISIT TO NIGERIA — MAY 9, 1997

On May 9, 1997, Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi arrived in Kano, Nigeria, for a historic and controversial visit during the military administration of General Sani Abacha.

The visit, organised around the Islamic New Year, brought together Gaddafi, Abacha and Niger's President Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara. Gaddafi also participated in religious gatherings at Kano's Kofar Mata Mosque and met prominent Islamic leaders, including the Sultan of Sokoto.

However, beyond its religious and diplomatic significance, the visit triggered an international controversy. Libya was under United Nations aviation sanctions imposed in 1992 following the Lockerbie bombing, and Gaddafi's journey raised serious questions about Nigeria's compliance with international obligations.

During his visit, Gaddafi openly criticised Western powers, rejected the UN sanctions and called for resistance against what he described as Western interference in the Muslim world.

The United States strongly condemned the journey, questioning Nigeria's role in facilitating the visit and threatening to raise the matter before the UN Security Council.

Nearly three decades later, the May 1997 visit remains a remarkable chapter in the diplomatic history of Nigeria, Libya and Africa, illustrating the complex relationship between religion, international politics, sovereignty and global power.

HISTORICAL REMEMBRANCE: FARIS ODEH — THE BOY WHO STOOD BEFORE A TANK

29 October 2000 | Gaza, Palestine

On this day in 2000, 14-year-old Palestinian Faris Odeh became the subject of one of the most iconic photographs of the Second Palestinian Intifada. Standing fearlessly before an Israeli military tank, he raised a stone against overwhelming military power. The unforgettable photograph, captured by Associated Press photographer Laurent Rebours, became a powerful symbol of Palestinian resistance and the struggle for freedom.

Just ten days later, on 8 November 2000, Faris was shot in the neck by Israeli troops near the Karni Crossing. He was only 14 years old.

His image became a lasting reminder of the human cost of occupation and conflict, particularly for children whose childhoods are shaped by violence rather than education, security and hope.

History must never forget Faris Odeh. No child should have to face war, occupation or violence to have their humanity recognised. Every Palestinian child deserves freedom, dignity, protection and the opportunity to live.

Justice, freedom and peace for Palestine.

A remarkable moment unfolded during U.S. Vice President JD Vance’s midterm campaign rally in Hendersonville, North Carolina, on October 19, 2026.

As Vance addressed supporters at the Republican rally, a protester suddenly stood among the crowd and shouted, “Release the Epstein files!” The interruption briefly shifted the atmosphere inside the venue as security moved to escort the protester from the event.

Vance responded with a pointed remark, joking that although he had just spoken about there being “zero illegal border crossings,” “one isn’t bad, right?” The comment drew laughter and cheers from parts of the crowd, while the protester was removed from the venue.

The episode quickly became one of the most striking moments of the rally—not because of a campaign speech or a policy announcement, but because a single protester managed to interrupt the political spectacle with a demand that has continued to generate intense public debate: the release of the Epstein files.

Captured on video and circulated widely online, the exchange stands as a vivid snapshot of the increasingly charged political atmosphere surrounding the 2026 midterm elections—where questions of transparency, immigration, political accountability, and public trust continue to collide on the campaign trail.

YEMEN AND VIETNAM: WHEN POWER MEETS RESISTANCE

History teaches us that military superiority does not guarantee political victory. Vietnam demonstrated this truth, and Yemen is adding a new chapter to the debate.

From ancient civilisations to decades of division, foreign intervention, and civil war, Yemen has endured profound suffering. Today, the conflict and Red Sea tensions reveal how drones, missiles, and asymmetric warfare can challenge even technologically advanced powers.

The world is watching. Smaller nations and strategists are studying the changing balance of power. Yet the greatest tragedy remains the suffering of innocent civilians, who deserve peace, security, and a future free from war.

Vietnam challenged the myth of invincible military power. Yemen is testing it again.

History's warning is clear: overwhelming force cannot guarantee lasting political success, and peace cannot be built through military power alone.

PALESTINE & GAZA: PROTECT THE CHILDREN, PRESERVE THE FUTURE, AND LET FREEDOM PREVAIL. 🇵🇸

Children are not merely the leaders of tomorrow; they are the hope of today and the foundation upon which a peaceful future must be built. Every Palestinian child in Gaza and the West Bank deserves the right to live in peace, receive an education, access medical care, grow up in safety, and dream without the constant fear of violence.

No child should have to grow up surrounded by destruction, lose their family to conflict, or watch their childhood disappear beneath the weight of war. Childhood should be defined by education, laughter, opportunity, and love—not fear, displacement, suffering, or the loss of innocent lives.

The freedom of Palestinian children is a matter of humanity, justice, and international responsibility. Their lives, dignity, and fundamental rights must be protected, regardless of their nationality, religion, or place of birth.

The United Nations, international human rights organisations, and the global community must intensify their efforts to protect children, uphold international humanitarian law, ensure humanitarian assistance reaches those in need, and hold accountable those responsible for violations of children's rights. Words of concern must be transformed into meaningful action.

History will remember not only the conflicts we witnessed, but also the choices we made when innocent children needed protection. The world must never allow the suffering of Palestinian children in Gaza and the West Bank to become something humanity simply learns to ignore.

Every child deserves a childhood. Every child deserves freedom. Every child deserves a future.

Let us stand for a future where Palestinian children can return to their classrooms, play safely in their communities, live with their families, and grow up with hope instead of fear.

Because children are the leaders of tomorrow, protecting them today is our collective responsibility.

Let humanity speak louder than hatred, let justice prevail over indifference, and let peace become a reality for every Palestinian child.

A Historic Moment in the Face of Fear

Six days after the tragic terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush stood at the Islamic Center of Washington, D.C., and delivered a message that carried profound historical significance: “Islam is peace.”

At a moment when fear, anger, and suspicion threatened to divide Americans, President Bush called for Muslim Americans to be treated with dignity and respect. He warned against hatred and intimidation, declaring that those who targeted their fellow citizens in anger did not represent the best of America, but “the worst of humankind.”

That moment remains a powerful reminder that terrorism has no religion, hatred has no nationality, and the actions of extremists must never be used to condemn an entire faith or community.

History teaches us that in moments of crisis, true leadership is measured not by the ability to deepen division, but by the courage to defend humanity, protect the innocent, and stand for unity.

Peace, dignity, justice, and respect for every human being must always be stronger than fear and hatred.

#UnitedNations Secretary-General @antonioguterres reminds the world that the true measure of power is not domination, but responsibility.

“The greatest power is not the power to dominate. It is the power to build a future that works for everyone.”

At a time when humanity faces conflict, inequality, displacement, and uncertainty, this message carries a profound historical lesson: power finds its highest purpose not in controlling others, but in serving humanity, protecting dignity, advancing peace, and building a future where no one is left behind.

The future of humanity will be shaped by how wisely we choose to use the power entrusted to us.

“Sudan, Remember Us” (2024)
Directed by Hind Meddeb

Sudan, Remember Us is more than a documentary; it is a historical testimony to a generation of young Sudanese who refused to allow fear, repression, or violence to silence their dreams of freedom.

Through poetry, music, art, and collective memory, the film follows young people determined to keep the spirit of their revolution alive, even as arrests and the violent suppression of protests threaten their lives and their hopes.

Their powerful conviction is simple: “Words are stronger than bullets.”

For years, fear attempted to silence a nation, while hope survived in fragments—in songs, poems, friendships, and the courage to continue speaking. Hind Meddeb brings these fragments together, preserving the voices of a generation that chose expression over silence and hope over despair.

Sudan, Remember Us reminds us that history is not written only by those who hold power. It is also written by ordinary people who dare to speak, create, resist, remember, and believe that a better future is possible.

When bullets seek to silence a people, their words can become their history. And when their voices refuse to disappear, memory becomes an act of resistance.
