Historic News! Dan Riccio ’86, ’24MS—a former key leader and innovator at Apple for 26 years—has committed $50 million to the College of Engineering which will now be known as the Daniel J. Riccio Jr. College of Engineering. The gift will go to immediate and long-term initiatives to fuel innovative research, strengthen academic excellence, and expand access and opportunity for generations of UMass Amherst engineering students. Abu Bony Amin is a PhD candidate in Electrical and Computer Engineering at UMass Amherst whose 2026 is shaping up to be a monumental and transformative year. Abu was not only recently named the recipient of this year’s Distinguished Teaching Award for his exemplary skills in the classroom, but Abu has also secured a full-time position as a Senior Subsystems Engineer in Silicon Photonics at Skorpios Technologies, Inc. following the exciting news that he has officially become a Green Card holder.

Having worked with Abu through our Teaching Fellows training, the Teaching Academy, and throughout many events such as Commencement, our team recently took some time to speak with him about his journey at UMass Amherst, as well as what’s next for him during this exciting year. Our first year of Strengthening Healthcare Innovation through Nursing and Engineering (SHINE) has begun!

Hard hats are coming off, and the doors are open!

Following a busy summer of preparation and finishing touches, the new Sustainable Engineering Laboratories (SEL) building is now open to the @umass community.

Bringing together work in fields including energy systems, ocean and wave energy, transportation, and materials, the SEL will create new opportunities for learning, collaboration, and interdisciplinary research focused on some of the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges.

The building's design won the grand prize in the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and Built Environment Plus Embodied Carbon Reduction Challenge, which recognizes projects that cut the emissions generated by materials and construction.
