Kinesiology major Rylee Shunney has a lot of love for youth sports, which she says helped shape her into who she is today. Now, Shunney, along with fellow kin major Ella Bosselman, are giving it everything they have to ensure today’s kids have the same experience! Both serve as co-president of @runyourcity_amherst_umass, one chapter of a national non-profit that eliminates the costs that come with youth sports to allow students to learn teamwork and leadership through running 👟 Click the link in our bio to read about Shunney’s experience and how the local RYC chapter came to be. taken in UMass Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences by @umasssphhs

We’re proud to introduce this month’s #SpotlightScholar, Alicia Timme-Laragy, a developmental toxicologist in the UMass Amherst School of Public Health & Health Sciences @umasssphhs. She conducts impactful research to illuminate how early exposure to chemicals like PFAS, which are ubiquitous in the environment and consumer products, may influence organ development and long-term disease risk.

“Understanding the effects of these chemicals in early life is important because what happens in the womb can last a lifetime,” says Timme-Laragy. “These subtle changes in how organs develop and function can lead to an increased risk of disease, including diabetes and obesity, later in life.”

A big thank you to @rutgerssph Dean Dr. Perry Halkitis for speaking with our students, faculty, and staff during this month’s Dean’s Seminar! We appreciate everyone who joined us for an afternoon of dynamic conversation as Dr. Halkitis examined how public health’s historical emphasis on disease and risk has too often obscured the lived experiences of individuals and communities. Can’t wait for the next seminar!
