PETILLO–BUELL "Patti" Telecaster Every year, I make a guitar for @seahearnow and @dannybones64 @transparentclinchgallery to help support charities in our community. This year, I created a tribute to one of music’s great singer-songwriters, @officialrumbledoll Patti Scialfa! This custom "Patti" Telecaster was designed to honor the touring specifications of @springsteen Telecasters, which were created by my father Phil Petillo. The neck was shaped to match one of Bruce’s preferred sizes, ranging between a thin “V” and a rounded “C” profile. For this neck build, a slab of African Padauk naturally orange-red in color to evoke the hue of Patti's hair.  The guitar’s theme draws inspiration from Patti’s musical creativity and the depth of her songwriting. One of the central inspirations comes from “Spanish Dancer,” from her debut studio album, Rumble Doll, and the lyric: “Still like that Spanish Dancer, I throw my roses down for him across these beds of darkness, he opens his arms and gathers them in.” Those words inspired the engraved roses on the guitar’s brass control plate, creating a direct visual connection to Patti’s songwriting. A monarch butterfly was also incorporated into the plate as a symbol of strength, endurance, transformation, and resilience, reflecting Patti’s eight-year battle with multiple myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer. Together, the roses and butterfly bring elements of her music and personal journey. The electronics reflect the lineage of both Phil Petillo & Kevin Buell: the neck pickup is a faithful replica of the Born to Run era design created by Dr. Phil Petillo for Bruce, while the bridge pickup is a “Buell Bucker” featuring black allen screw magnets, designed by Kevin Buell, Bruce’s longtime legendary guitar tech. All pictures of Bruce & Patti are taken by Danny Clinch over the years.
