🌎 𝐀𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐬, the conference brings together advanced graduate students and emerging and early-career scholars from across disciplines to share new approaches, diverse methodologies, and perspectives that deepen our understanding of Cuba and Cuban communities worldwide.⁣

🎤 This year’s keynote address, “𝘎𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘉𝘦𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘈𝘤𝘵: 𝘊𝘶𝘣𝘢𝘯 𝘚𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘕𝘰𝘸,” will be delivered by 𝐃𝐫. 𝐋𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐮𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚, Professor of Cuban and Caribbean History at the University of Florida and co-editor of Cuban Studies. Guerra will draw on her recent scholarship and oral history interviews to reflect on the evolution of Cuban Studies, the intellectual and political debates that have shaped the field, and the challenges and possibilities facing Cuba and Cuban communities worldwide at a time of profound uncertainty.⁣⁣

Join the Cuban Heritage Collection for a special evening featuring Cuban activists 𝐋𝐮𝐢𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐎𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐀𝐥𝐜á𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐚 and 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐑𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐬 in conversation with renowned journalist 𝐉𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐬. Together, they will reflect on artistic freedom, dissent, exile, and the ongoing struggle for freedom of expression in Cuba.⁣

The conversation will offer a unique opportunity to hear firsthand perspectives from two prominent voices in Cuba's independent civic and dissident movements, including the 𝐒𝐚𝐧 𝐈𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐫𝐨 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, a grassroots collective of artists, writers, and activists that emerged in Havana in 2018 to challenge censorship and advocate for greater civic and artistic freedoms on the island. Their work has drawn international attention and inspired a new generation of Cubans committed to expanding the space for independent expression.⁣

We are thrilled to announce that the Cuban Heritage Collection (CHC) at the University of Miami Libraries is now accepting applications for the 2027-2028 Roberto C. Goizueta Distinguished Presidential Residence Program! 🎉

Established in 2023, the program welcomes senior faculty, independent scholars, curators, and other non-fiction authors from the United States and abroad to spend a semester in residence at the Cuban Heritage Collection, advancing in-depth research and writing toward a project of broad scholarly or public significance (typically a book) based on a particular area of the Collection and related to Cuba and/or the Cuban diaspora, broadly defined. For the 2027-2028 award year, the CHC will award two one-semester fellowships: Fall 2027 and Spring 2028

🇨🇺👠 A PIECE OF CUBAN HISTORY PRESERVED IN MIAMI

Calle Ocho News visited the Cuban Heritage Collection at University of Miami Libraries and spoke with Amanda T. Moreno-Schroeder, Director of the Cuban Heritage Collection.

Among the remarkable pieces preserved there are shoes belonging to the legendary Celia Cruz — one of the details visitors might be surprised to discover. 👠✨

The collection preserves photographs, documents, recordings, and personal memories that help tell the story of Cuba and the Cuban exile experience. 🇨🇺❤️

One of the best parts of this trip to #Miami: thanks to mi amiga @cbalmori, I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon at the Cuban Heritage Collection at the University of Miami (@umchc) where they have THE premiere collection of primary source material pertaining to Cuban history. Genealogy? Pre-revolution documents? Historical artifacts? Todo. We’re talking 900 archival collections and over 60,000 books and periodicals. 📰

(If you’ve read #NowThen — translated to #TodaLaVidaEsAhora by @cuesta_mabel — you know incredible it was for me to see (and hold!) documents about José Antonio Echeverría — one of the main characters and real-life historical figure in my novel!)

And best part? The collection is open to the public. Anyone can go in and peruse the stacks of information preserved through generations so that Cuba stories can stay alive.

🇨🇺📚 Preserving our history means preserving our identity.

We had the opportunity to visit with Amanda T. Moreno-Schroeder, MSLIS/MA, Librarian Associate Professor, Esperanza Bravo de Varona Chair, and Director of the Cuban Heritage Collection at University of Miami Libraries.

Amanda personally showed us this remarkable collection and shared why preserving photographs, letters, documents, recordings, and family memories is so important to understanding Cuba’s history, the Cuban exile experience, and the generations that helped shape Miami. ❤️🌴

Last Thursday, the Lowe Art Museum, in partnership with the Cuban Heritage Collection at the University of Miami Libraries, welcomed scholars, artists, and community members for Afro-Cuban Art: History and Memory, a compelling conversation exploring the creativity, experiences, and contributions of Afrodescendant communities to Cuban art and its history.

Moderated by Dr. Michael J. Bustamante, the discussion brought together Dr. Alejandro de la Fuente, Dr. Bárbaro Martínez-Ruiz, and artist and professor Juana Valdés to reflect on race, identity, historical memory, artistic practice, and the important role museums, archives, and scholarship play in recovering overlooked histories.

The program also marked a meaningful close to El Pasado Mío / My Own Past: Afrodescendant Contributions to Cuban Art and Afrocubanismo: Highlights from the Ramón and Nercys Cernuda Collection, which have now concluded their run at the Lowe.

Thank you to our panelists, partners, and everyone who joined us for this important conversation and helped us celebrate these exhibitions.

Arturo Rodríguez is a Cuban American visual artist based in Miami whose figurative works explore themes of displacement, alienation, and the human experience. After moving from Cuba to Spain as a teenager and later settling in Miami, Rodríguez developed a distinctive artistic language influenced by the traditions of European masters and shaped by his personal experiences as an immigrant.⁣

This past Thursday, we had the honor of presenting Imagined Landscape: Honoring Humberto Calzada—a celebration and conversation exploring the life, artistic achievements, and lasting influence of Cuban American artist and University of Miami alumnus Humberto Calzada.

The event was sold out, pushing the limits of the CHC space and ultimately leading us to the Kislak Center, where an incredible community of family, friends, artists, scholars, and admirers gathered to honor Calzada’s legacy.

The evening opened with heartfelt remarks from Calzada’s children, Carolina and Nicolás Calzada, in honor of their father. A moderated discussion followed, led by Victor Deupi, Associate Professor of Practice at the University of Miami School of Architecture, with panelists Carol Damian of the Florida International Univeristy School of Art and Art History and Katrin Hansing of Baruch College’s Weissman School of Arts and Sciences.

The evening was complemented by a moving clip from filmmaker and longtime friend Eduardo Montes-Bradley’s film Humberto Calzada: Reconstructing Havana.

We are deeply grateful to the Calzada family for sharing this special evening with us, and to all the family and friends who joined us to celebrate Humberto Calzada, his extraordinary work, and his enduring influence.
