A recent campus collaboration paired CAHSS students with SCSE students to solve real-world problems! 🧠🌎

They are proving that when you want to solve the complex problems of the 21st century, you look to both the future of technology and the heart of the humanities.

Students consistently noted that this collaboration felt distinct from traditional coursework because it involved creating tangible solutions intended to benefit real people facing real challenges.

Looking ahead to Spring 2027, Dr. Aparna Katre and Dr. Jomara Sandbulte are transitioning the course model into permanent Vertically Integrated Projects (VIPs) for both undergraduate and graduate students. 💛

In today’s world of instant digital news, trading keyboards for traditional typesetting tools reminded students of the intentionality behind printed communication.

Students in Dr. Jennifer Moore’s History of American Media class visited Dr. Krista Twu’s experimental Book Lab where they worked in groups to craft a single sentence using typesetting tools and a 100-year-old hand lever press. Journalism student Chase Lindaman said “It definitely changed my perspective...you have to make sure you’re not missing anything because there’s no backspace.” Communication major Ella Thill added that the hands-on experience was “way more eye opening than I thought it was going to be.” by @umdcahss

In Spring 2026, students and faculty members from very different corners of campus came together around a complex problem: food insecurity in Duluth’s Central Hillside. 🏡🥕

Higher education has long championed interdisciplinary thinking. But the structures that organize campus life can hinder collaboration.

The Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) model is designed to address that division.

“It is always a challenge to bring together students who are developing expertise in completely different fields, but that’s where the magic happens,” Dr. Aparna Katre, Interdisciplinary Studies Program Director, noted.

“I am truly excited to see the collaboration, integrative thinking, and civic-mindedness these students will sharpen as they work through this project.”

Directed by guest artist SarahLynn Brown, this adaptation of Macbeth, rooted in Shakespeare’s classic poetry, will explore fresh perspectives and find resonance with the present moment.

With an energetic, fast-paced narrative, this story is both refuge and reckoning, embracing the bonds of kinship, the wonder of mysticism, and the haunted beauty of a homeland that is fiercely worth the fight.

In a distinct departure from the gloomy, apocalyptic settings typical of the tragedy, this production grounds the play within a rich, vibrant, and natural world.

Featuring a powerful matriarchal structure — with female-identifying and presenting actors portraying Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, and King Duncan — the staging reframes the iconic story around connectedness and the ripple effects of ambition.

Meanwhile, the tragedy’s famous trio of witches are reimagined as non-binary caretakers of the realm operating between worlds to oversee the shifting scales of space and time, here called “The Wayward Ones.”

“Because Shakespeare was such a genius, it’s impossible to break his plays,” Brown said. “That’s why artists continue to experiment with them — they are wonderfully malleable.”

The State of Minnesota recently released the Minnesota Maternal Mortality Report, which found that the #1 cause of death in the period of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum was mental health. Solving a crisis this complex requires cross-disciplinary connection, which led CAHSS to host a community discussion and interprofessional dialogue on postpartum mental health.

Over two evenings in the @umdmartinlibrary rotunda, CAHSS brought together 85 researchers, health professionals, and community members ranging from psychologists and pharmacists to social workers and doulas. By setting the stage for lived-experience and frontline expertise to meet, we created a space where folks could share frustrations, align on best practices, and build a more integrated network of care.

To dive deeper into the conversation, check out the news articles below:

CAHSS history and anthropology students spent their summer learning about the archaeology of capitalism in an unexpected classroom: the woods behind an old U.S. Steel warehouse in Morgan Park.

Under the guidance of Senior Instructor David Woodward, students taking HIST 3096 (Field Experience in Public History: Archaeology) were looking for traces of the Northland’s industrial boom years in this Twin Ports neighborhood. The skills they learned here are setting them up for success in a rapidly growing archaeology job market.

In the early 1910s, U.S. Steel essentially built the entire town of Morgan Park from scratch. This area was marketed as a “workers’ utopia” equipped with churches, schools, and stores all built by U.S. Steel. But this generosity came with a catch: total corporate paternalism.

The density of these social relationships meant that speaking out against working conditions or attempting to unionize could mean exile from your church community, losing your children’s place in school, or even eviction. The intentionally blurred line between work life and personal life forced workers into either total compliance or quiet rebellion.

In 1913, the area studied by Woodward’s students served as the central drop-off point for raw materials — the place where lumber, steel, and stone were processed, and where temporary crews lived while building the company town from the ground up.

Students used basic techniques of archaeological data collection such as mapping, and ground penetrating radar to excavate the property. While doing so, they found evidence of the workers’ lives like buttons, broken plates, and as anticipated, a lot of building debris.

Beyond their field school experience, these students are gaining the practical skills necessary to excel in the field. With degrees in Public History, History, Anthropology, Environment, Sustainability, and Geography (ESG), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), they are prepared to enter the workforce immediately as field archaeologists or technicians.

This is a critical time for such education as researchers predict that the Cultural Resource Management (CRM) industry is poised for significant expans by @umdcahss
