Earlier this month, Hack Dearborn 5, organized by the Google Developer Group, brought approximately 161 students from 21 universities to the University of Michigan-Dearborn for 24 hours of hacking, building, and innovation! 💻 Participants collaborated to create 50 projects, tackle industry-sponsored challenges, connect with professionals, and turn their creative ideas into reality. A huge thank-you to the Google Developer Group, sponsors, organizers, volunteers, and participants who made Hack Dearborn 5 possible. We can’t wait to see what’s planned for next year! 🏁 A major milestone for the Dearborn Electric Racing team! At Oakland University, the team successfully completed its first competition since the team’s revamp—and in nearly a decade. The team passed the Brakes Test within the first 30 minutes. Although autocross brought challenges and required several rounds of troubleshooting, team members worked together to complete five successful runs with no electrical faults. They finished 3rd among the electric vehicle teams and recorded the 62nd-fastest run out of 172 total runs. This achievement reflects countless hours of hard work, late nights, problem-solving, and dedication. It was an exciting way to close the 2025–2026 vehicle season, and the team is incredibly proud of how far it has come. A three-year international EV competition gave UM-Dearborn students — from undergraduates through PhD candidates — hands-on experiences typically only gained in the automotive industry. Many secured internships through the program, and at least five landed full-time jobs. “I've learned essentially every piece that goes into a battery pack and the project management skills,” said Duncan Tyree, a PhD student in electrical, electronics and computer engineering who served as project manager for the BattChallenge team for all three years. “I've done a lot of deliverables for this that you don't see in a classroom ever.” Learn more: https://myumi.ch/wwXyx (link in bio) A group of four people stand behind a table with the sign "Battery Workforce Challenge."
