From working inside the Maryland Governor’s Office to presenting a policy proposal to state leaders and preparing to represent UMD at West Point, Can Torumtay, a double major in the Department of Government and Politics and the UMD School of Public Policy, is turning his interests into hands-on experience. 🐢

This summer, Can was one of six UMD College Park students selected for the Maryland Public Service Scholars’ Governor’s Summer Internship Program. During the fellowship, he worked in the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and later joined two fellow UMD students in presenting a capstone policy proposal to Maryland Governor Wes Moore, Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller and members of the governor’s executive staff.

Next, Can will head to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point as one of UMD’s four delegates to the Student Conference on U.S. Affairs (SCUSA), building on his interests in diplomacy, international relations and foreign policy.

President Trump and Xi Jinping meet at the White House on September 24 for their third summit of Trump's second term. As global conflicts, tech rivalries, and domestic shifts reframe U.S.-China relations, what does this pivotal meeting portend for the future?

In this episode of Faculty Lens, Robert Daly, Professor of the Practice and Founding Director of the Program on China and the United States at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, breaks down the state of Washington-Beijing relations leading up to the summit. Daly brings decades of expertise as a former Foreign Service officer, director of the Wilson Center’s Kissinger Institute, and presidential interpreter for leaders including Jiang Zemin, Jimmy Carter, and Henry Kissinger.
