🧬🐛 Corn earworm is a common pest that sweet corn farmers have to manage. Cara Lamberty, Faculty Specialist, helps the Fritz lab rear thousands of these insects each year. Maintaining corn earworms is a lot of work but it pays off with scientific gains. The Fritz lab, alongside their collaborators @univofmaryland, @ncstate, and @utknoxville, have developed genomic approaches to monitor and manage pesticide resistance in agricultural pest species. 🐍 Biological sciences Ph.D. student Jory van Thiel used to keep cobras as pets. Now he studies how their venom became so incredibly deadly.

“I’m most interested in what genes are involved in venom, what changes have occurred in those genes and in what order, and ultimately, why has evolution taken a particular genetic path,” Jory said.

“Wading” in with a intern highlight! 💧 This semester, two of our interns happen to be in the same class, Freshwater Biology (BSCI467), being taught by lecturer, Dr. Garfinkel! Ru, our Outreach and Events Intern, and Teagan, our Digital & Social Media Intern, spend their Thursdays together in a lab for this class. However, this class is no ordinary lab as they get to go outside to locations across campus and Maryland to collect macro invertebrates. By looking at insects up close and in the real-world setting, they get to learn principles of biology and conservation of freshwater habitats! Two students stand outside on campus. Jalah Townsend is all about helping students do good, and a grant from the Do Good Campus Fund is helping her do exactly that.

Her project gives students a chance to apply life sciences to real-world problems while thinking through the social and ethical questions that come with science. Funding is supporting mini-grants for students to tackle challenges identified by community members, like gaps in STEM education, access to clean water, food deserts, or ethical concerns in genetic engineering.
