The world is hurting right now. I’m hurting. I know @umerpiracha is too.

I’m incredibly proud of and thankful to @aryadreaming @dialmformirza for keeping things moving with @discotehran.nyc and @cinematehran.nyc through the pain, and for creating a space where we can channel what we’re feeling in hopes that it resonates with others.

If you’re able to spare some time, the recent two hour show dedicated to the people of Iran is up on SoundCloud and the @thelotradio site. @bratmobile1999 lifts us up for the first hour. Umer and I take it from ~ 1:00:00 to 1:30:00, and Arya and I carry it through the end.

Umer and I have been exploring together for a while now, and sharing it publicly felt therapeutic. More soon.

Tracklist below:

1. Luis Paniagua - Preparativos Para El Viaje 🇪🇸
2. Jorge Reyes - Aguaquemada 🇲🇽
3. Norbert Vogel - Universal Peace 🇩🇪
4. Dom Um Romão - Lynces B 🇧🇷

DHAMĀL is a percussion-led Sufi rhythm gathering rooted in South Punjabi and Sindhi traditions, where listening naturally spills into movement. The evening begins with a focused set- Sufi voice, dhol, tabla, and trumpet- before opening into a shared space (open jam) shaped by repetition, pulse, and collective energy.

NEW DATE! Sometimes, artists' schedules change for happy reasons. Violinist and meditation guide Carson Marshall is getting married! As a result, we are shifting the date of his Sufi Buddhist Fusion Soundbath with vocalist Umer Piracha to early November. This musical meditation is a great introduction for beginners. Before we all get comfortable on our yoga mats and melt into the floor, there will be a conversation between Umer and Pastor Marisa Egerstrom of the Florence Congregational Church about how he makes sense of centuries-old musical and spiritual traditions - Sufi wisdom and Buddhist practice - in his own modern life.
All tickets for the September date have been and we hope to see you in November! Details and tickets on our website >> www.bombyx.live taken in Bombyx Center for Arts & Equity by @umerpiracha

I’m very pleased to host my first vocal workshop with guest artists!

Global Voices is a participatory voice workshop and performance with Umer Priracha (@umerpiracha) and Asia Mieleszko (@walking_singing).

Join this vocal workshop, performance, and community experience at @delightfactorynyc . Explore the vocal styles of two beautiful cultural traditions, Ukrainian village singing, and Sufi devotional music. Mela Closs, Voice Ritualist, facilitates the convergence of these two rich traditions with guest performers/facilitators Umer Priracha and Asia Mieleszko in a participatory evening of listening, learning, meditating, and vocally creating together.

The workshop takes place in two parts. In part one, Umer will lead us in his workshop “The Unheld Note”.

The Unheld Note is a participatory workshop using Sufi vocal practice, breath, silence, and deep listening to restore forms of attention that contemporary life steadily erodes. Moving between sound and stillness, participants explore what happens when we stop trying to interpret, optimize, or resolve experience- and instead become receptive to what can only be felt before it is named.

Following this 700 year-old tradition, we travel to the Ukraine, where Asia will guide us through Ukrainian folk singing traditions.

Ever wondered how Ukrainian village polyphony works? In this workshop, we’ll learn traditional multipart songs and ritual songs while exploring the techniques that make these communal harmonies so distinctive.

Mela will lead vocal warm-ups before each section. Sit on the floor with your shoes off in the beautiful Delight Factory and experience voice in ways both new and old.

Arrive by 4:30 to experience Sufi vocal music.
Arrive by 6 to experience Ukrainian vocal music.
Or stay for the whole journey! Drinks available for purchase.

The evening begins with a focused set- Sufi voice, dhol, tabla, and trumpet- before opening into a shared space (open jam) shaped by repetition, pulse, and collective energy.

In shrine culture across the Indus region, dhamāl is how communities hold grief, joy, devotion, and exhaustion together in public-through rhythm rather than explanation. This gathering brings that function into a contemporary Brooklyn context, without spectacle or instruction.

Barzakh Café is the ideal container for this: informal, intimate, and porous- a threshold space where sound can move easily from performance into participation. Come to listen, come to move, or come simply to sit inside the rhythm.
