“I have grown tremendously as a scientist and a person in my time here, and feel very privileged to have opportunities to give back to our department.”

Congratulations to ChE PhD student Jared Arkfeld as the 2026 Joseph J. Martin awardee. Annually, the award is given to a graduate student who exhibits outstanding scholarship, athletic prowess and a strong commitment to service within the department.

Arkfeld’s research explores the impacts that acidity and presence of different dissolved alkali cations have on product selectivity for the electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction.

During his first semester at Michigan, Akrfeld joined the University of Michigan Powerlifting Team (UMPL). He’s competed 8 times for the university, including 4 national competitions. After 6 years of lifting, in 2025 Jared qualified for the 2025 Arnold Sports Festival, the world’s biggest strength sports expo, accomplishing one of his biggest goals.

🏋️Jared’s power lifting stats:
- 585 lb squat
- 380 lb bench press
- 675 lb deadlift, at 180 lb bodyweight
