Today's nonfiction release reveals how policing is less about managing crime than about governing possibility.

Drawing on digital media theory, science and technology studies, critical race and ethnic studies, and carceral theory, THE CARCERAL SURROUND charts how seemingly disparate media converge into an environment of control that links technocratic governance to the maintenance of racial hierarchy and capitalist order.

"At once an expansive study of the framework of policing and an indictment of its logics. R. Joshua Scannell offers new insight into racial capitalism and its mechanisms, and, importantly, its undoing."
—Simone Browne

"With a powerful combination of political commitment and scholarly rigor, The Carceral Surround shows how computation and policing became integrated—and how that integration extends far beyond hardware and software expressly developed for use by the police."
—Seb Franklin

Author R. Joshua Scannell is assistant professor of digital media theory at The New School.

Scent Companion to Olfactory Worldmaking by Hsuan L. Hsu

Produced by Dean’s Bottom in collaboration with Hsuan L. Hsu, 2026
134 pages, softcover
with four scent vials

Scent Companion is a series bringing together writers, artists, and perfumers to expand how audiences can engage directly with scent in writing and art. Through existing fragrance, newly commissioned scent works, and scent sketches, each Scent Companion accompanies and responds to a text or artwork, allowing smell to be experienced and archived.

The first edition expands upon Olfactory Worldmaking by Hsuan L. Hsu, professor of English at the University of California, Davis. The smells articulated in Hsu’s seminal text are brought to life through four scents responding to each chapter of the book, with contributions from artists and perfumers agustine zegers, Warren Cariou, Tanaïs, Justin Charles, Renée Stout, and Alessandra Mondin.

In Olfactory Worldmaking, Hsu traces how olfactive experience operates across visceral, material, and affective registers to create new ways of relating, challenging the extractive logics of racial and colonial capitalism. Bringing together environmental humanities, sensory studies, and critical ethnic studies, Hsu demonstrates how scent animates suppressed histories. Hsu theorises olfaction as a speculative, reparative practice. Examining projects from historical novels, memoirs, and speculative fiction to conceptual art and experimental perfumes, he reveals how these works mobilise scent to imagine alternative ways of sensing, relating, and creating more equitably liveable worlds.

This Scent Companion includes:

- One copy of Olfactory Worldmaking by Hsuan L. Hsu
- Four 2ml scent vials
- Set of reference cards
- Eight sampling strips

Celebrate @muradavid's newest memoir, "Exit, Miss Saigon," on Oct 7 with readings, Asian American theater history, and a Q&A facilitated by @joskates2!

As author @mauriceruffin says, "Some writers are merely storytellers, but others, like Franz Fanon, Malcolm X, and Toni Morrison, were intellectual freedom fighters. David Mura fits this category and provides a narrative that is thought-provoking, inspirational, and empowering."

Checkpoint 300: Colonial Space in Palestine has been shortlisted for the 2026 Palestine Book Awards

Checkpoint 300, the highly securitized border facility between occupied Bethlehem and Jerusalem, is a central feature of Israeli control of Palestinian land and life. An apparatus of turnstiles, overcrowded corridors, and invasive inspections, the checkpoint regulates the movement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, granting access to some while excluding most. Offering a nuanced exploration of space, Mark Griffiths reveals Checkpoint 300 as a stark symbol of Israeli colonialism that embodies larger systems of control and violence.

Griffiths’s sensitive and timely work highlights the myriad ways Palestinians are affected by Israel’s spatial control—whether they travel through the checkpoint or not—demonstrating how colonial infrastructures of inequity extend far beyond their physical boundaries to shape daily life. Drawing on nearly a decade of fieldwork, Griffiths examines how colonial power infiltrates family dynamics, enforces gendered mobility restrictions, shapes local economies, and extends into the global exchange of capital and security technologies. He also underscores how Palestinians endure and resist under oppressive conditions and how indigenous forms of life and living are sustained, illuminating how colonial space is contested and countered, unmade and remade.

Blending meticulous research with vivid human stories to show the lived realities of borders, power, and resistance in the West Bank, Checkpoint 300 portrays the checkpoint as an entry into the ways that colonial space is formed through security infrastructure that is both the product and producer of wider geographies of oppression, complicity, and control. by @uminnpress

Timothy Campbell’s Improper Life was one of the first full length English texts to introduce Italian readings of biopolitics, dispositifs, Foucault, and the question concerning technology to an English readership raised on the dry, scientific, and apolitical Anglo-American readings of biopolitics, especially Rose. Campbell’s book also introduced English readers to a much broader range of biopolitical philosophers and it served as reminder that Agamben wrote much more than one book.

Campbell raises a series of questions concerning the entanglement of life and technology (biotech), which today are even more pressing than when he first asked them in 2011.

Today, the scope of the dispositif of the proper extends well beyond the division of life between the proper (bios) and improper (zoe). Earlier biopolitical concerns with the distinction between humans and animals, racialized and/or gendered hierarchies, are today almost surpassed (or at least confused and enhanced) by advances not only in biotech but also computer engineering.

Perhaps what matters today is less the confusion of the technological with the biological, but whether the technological can exist without the biological? Is this the post-humanism problem? A point where the improper has completed appropriated the proper? Is there an event on our horizon that is capable of disrupting this destiny?

For those interested in these questions, especially the relation between technology, life and the proper, Improper Life should be on your reading list.
