From @doctasuad “I’m always shocked when calls to stand in solidarity with Palestine fall on deaf ears. I feel I been in solidarity with Palestine my whole life, Umi taught me, as oppressed peoples we stand in solidarity with oppressed people everywhere. And of course Palestine being home to Al-Aqsa added to that. So it was of little surprise to me to see this article from a 1980 Muslim women’s magazine Sahabiy’at in Umi’s Archive.”

The fact that a group of mostly Black women converts chose to highlight this story in the first issue of their independent magazine is compelling, esp in the midst of the current instance of violent onslaught on Palestine. We share this artifact to remind us of our history of solidarity so we may enliven it in the present to build a just future.

To learn more about the magazine check out the collection “media” in the current exhibition. #linkinbio Photo of page from magazine. An article entitled Black Palestinians at War against a graphic of the Palestinian flag by @umisarchive

So the thing about archives is you often find yourself in them, literally, of course @umisarchive is my mother’s/family archive, but it was still a surprise for me to find this recording of myself. The full audio is about 9 mins. Teaching is definitely in the blood, Umi was a teacher and my grandma too although as a child I didn’t want to really be a teacher, but clearly wanted to play one on 📺😂while my audience is primarily imaginary students the babbling you hear in the background is my sister @dravery2017 which means I was probably 10 or 11 so this is from ‘88/89. I went to look up the book I was reading and it is an ESL book which makes sense because my mother taught junior high ESL for probably half of her career as a public school teacher. Edwidge Dandicat was one of her students!
It’s quite validating to hear this too. I’ve always been teaching “the truth to the young black youth!” And the accent, evidence of my bonafide Brooklyn origins! by @umisarchive

An IG version of the program from last night. I’m still processing my experience, but what I heard from the audience was that they felt joy and they cried, some saw themselves, they were inspired.
One of the audience members read my artist statement and said to me, you know your trajectory hasn’t really changed. You’re still taking care of your mother, that brought me to tears. I hadn’t thought of that. by @umisarchive

This day* in #blackhistory my grandfather, Aubrey J Weeks’ photographs from @umisarchive are featured in the #montreal magazine @themain to help tell the story of Rockhead’s Paradise the city’s most storied jazz club.! I’ve never really been sure why he was in Montreal, what this place was but it looks like, based on the article we’re probably related to the owner Rufus Rockhead by marriage because his wife was also a Weeks! Very cool moment #blackhistorymonth I really got to make it to Montreal!

I had interviewed her about Muslim women and fashion with no idea how it would end up in @umisarchive and no idea she would go so soon….She always made me look pretty. I was TENDERHEADED. Umi did not have the patience but Aunty Jameela did. She would braid my hair and add the beads and I loved to just shake my hair. She did so many things for me and was so many things, like a second mother. She used to brag about Kwanzaa starting on her birthday :) she made the best carrot cake known to humanity and I’m still trying to get it like she did. Blessed Birthday Auntie Jameela’s we love you and miss you! by @umisarchive

I immediately turned to @umisarchive Imam Jamil Al-Amin, as an Imam, leader and political prisoner, is in there. This is a clip from some mainstream coverage over 20 years ago. I really appreciate what he offers here. In 2:154 Allah says that we should not consider those who die fi sabililah as dead but living! So I take comfort in that he lives freely now. The very next three verses reminds us that we will be tested and that Allah’s blessing is with those who are patient. And so I am reminded again by my elders and ancestors to keep steady in the struggle. Inna lilahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun by @umisarchive

I want to join the chorus celebrating the freedom fighter who is Assata Shakur as her time in this dunya has ended. This woman who reminds me of my Umi (I learned reading her book, she spent a sometime in her childhood not too far away in Rochdale). This woman who reminds me of my Umi and that generation that raised me to be free. This woman who reminds me of that generation that put everything on the line for us, they were not perfect but they loved us so. And I just remembered I ended book with her words. May Assata be accepted without measure. Inna lilahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun. “We have nothing to lose but our chains!”
