📷 UM photojournalism student @casandra.e.photo has been making photos of Lady Griz basketball head coach Nate Harris on the court for awhile now. But making photos inside his home? That was new.

It’s where Evans found herself last month as part of her work with the @montanaphotoworkshop. Now in its third year, the workshop gives young photographers on-on-one professional mentorship that helps put their dream careers in reach.

The minimum age to drive in most states is 15 years old, luckily for 11-year-old Bryce Seiver, that doesn’t apply to the monster truck track. “We have always wanted [Bryce] to follow his dreams, whatever that means,” said Bryce’s mother Amanda Seiver.
In the moments leading up to a show, Bryce is serious. But once he dons the helmet, a joyous grin sweeps across his face. He transforms into a performer, the driver of the mini monster truck, Juvenile Destruction.

That’s a wrap at the third annual Montana Photo Workshop. Instructors, students and assistants may be exhausted, but we are still buzzing from the experience. What an inspiration to see the work that was created by 18 photographers during the workshop. Learning, growth and connection were at the forefront throughout the five days – whether in the story planning discussions, field photography sessions, edit sessions, small lectures, one-on-one meetings, group dinners or during Tamir Kalifa’s moving “Witness” program featuring Jazmin Cazares. The final public exhibition was incredible.

Thanks to the @umjschool , @canonusa and their EDU program and @camerabits for supporting our workshop in both large and small ways.

We’ll be sharing lots of stories from the workshop in the coming weeks. Stay tuned! by @umjschool

For the past three days, 18 students from Montana and across the country have been hard at work photographing and building relationships with their sources. Today at 3 p.m. in Don Anderson Hall, students will present their projects to the public. We look forward to this exciting end to a meaningful week of visual storytelling, learning, and connection.

The Montana Photo Workshop is back for its third year with four days of visual storytelling, seminars and portfolio reviews, all led by an all-star lineup of mentors. Hosted by the University of Montana School of Journalism, students are working on a variety of stories in the greater Missoula area on topics ranging from a couple living off the grid to a beekeeper to an 11-year-old monster truck driver. We hope you’ll join us for a celebration of student’s projects this Sunday at 3:00PM in the Montana Media Lab, located in Don Anderson Hall at the University of Montana.

For 25 years the J-School has hosted working journalists to mentor our students through the T. Anthony Pollner Distinguished Professorship. This Homecoming, many of those incredible professors will return to UM to say thank you to the family and to reconnect with students, faculty and alums. We’re also throwing a retirement party for Denise who’s signing off on her teaching career in December. We’d love to see you at Homecoming this year to celebrate these milestones. taken in University of Montana School of Journalism by @umjschool
