Our Give to the Max Day campaign is officially underway!

Hands-on design is at the heart of our mechanical engineering degree. Long before graduation, our students are in the lab turning abstract theory into something tangible.

While tuition and course fees cover basic classroom needs, bringing ambitious engineering projects to life requires additional support for instructional materials. As our student body grows and courses run multiple times a year, the demand for updated hardware, lendable kit components and raw project materials has never been higher.

This Give to the Max Day, we need your help to reach our $3,000 goal to ensure these hands-on learning opportunities remain possible for our students. Thanks to two alumni, Roberto Ruiz (M.S.M.E. ’81) and Pete Swenson (B.M.E ’83), all gifts up to $3,000 will be matched, doubling your support for ME students.

Congratulations to Professor Ognjen Ilic on being awarded the @darpa Director’s Fellowship!

This highly selective, one-year award provides $500,000 in additional funding to top performers in DARPA’s Young Faculty Award program, supporting Ilic’s continued work on ultralightweight nanophotonic radiators for adaptive, high-power heat rejection in spacecraft.

Eleven graduate students. Three minutes each. One slide.

On Tuesday, the Department of Mechanical Engineering hosted the 2026 Three Minute Thesis (ME3MT) competition. Our grad students took on the challenge of explaining complex doctoral research in just three minutes.

Behind every slide was a researcher working toward solutions for tomorrow’s challenges. It was inspiring to see the passion and purpose that drive their work, and a reminder that the ideas taking shape in our labs today could help build a better future for all of us.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is proud to announce that Professor Suo Yang has been elected to the AIAA Class of 2027 Associate Fellows by @aiaaerospace.

The grade of Associate Fellow recognizes individuals who have accomplished or been in charge of important engineering or scientific work, or who have done original work of outstanding merit. Only 17% of AIAA members are ever selected.
