Opening Wednesday June 25 (originally June 21), "Imagining Future Cities: Global and Minnesota Visions, Past and Present" examines the enduring pursuit of the Future City, both globally and in Minnesota. The concept of future cities as a means to create more habitable, just, and sustainable places for people to live, work, and play has captivated visionaries across place and time. This collection of illustrations, diagrams, and architectural drawings features groundbreaking case studies that reimagine the form and function of future cities. Curated by McKnight Land-Grant Professor and founding partner of vari architects, Dingliang Yang, along with a team of University of Minnesota School of Architecture and Design faculty, researchers, and students.

We are excited to welcome Seçil Binboğa as a new Tenure Track Assistant Professor this fall in ALI and the School of Architecture.

Seçil Binboğa is an architectural historian who has also served as the Cass Gilbert Visiting Assistant Professor at the College of Design. She has taught the lecture courses Modern and Contemporary Global Architecture History and Environment and Society, and seminars on the environmental histories of the Global South, and the visual culture of the Cold War. She has also taught a range of relevant courses in Houston and at the University of Michigan. In this role she will teach students across ALI in shared history courses and will teach architectural history across our graduate and undergraduate programs in the School of Architecture.

Seçil earned her Ph.D. in the History and Theory of Architecture from the University of Michigan’s College of Architecture and Urban Planning and received her professional education (B.Arch and M.Arch degrees) from the Middle East Technical University in Turkey. She studies the transnational histories of infrastructure design and resource extraction, focusing on the architectures of American imperialism in the modern Middle East, particularly in Cold War Turkey.  She received 1 of 6 National Carter Manny Awards given by the Graham Foundation in 21/22 across the US and was also an Emerging Scholar Fellow at the University of Houston.

She is currently working on her book project, “Architectures of Cold War Turkey: The Land, the River, and the Sea.” Research for this work has received support from the Social Science Research Council (International Dissertation Research Fellowship) and the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts (The Carter Manny Award: A Citation of Special Recognition in Writing).

Please join us in welcoming Seçil to our department and our college. taken in Rapson Hall by @umnarch

OFF/CUT: Catalyst 2025

This year’s Catalyst was conceived of and led by Malini Srivastava and Chango Cummings along with visiting faculty Mohamad Ismail from the University of Virginia and Emily Baker from the University of Arkansas. This focused on using digital tools including holographic projections and parametric computations to reuse imperfect wood off-cuts. These tools enable off-cuts to be used in the design and assembly of lightweight structures, a typology that typically relies on perfect and predictably dimensioned materials.

The one week event tested the idea that complex geometries with imperfect waste materials can be developed in early stages of design. Reversing typical workflows, they started the week with material inventory and understanding, then proceeded to a closely connected design development and full-scale build, test process. Students and faculty used various softwares (Karamba3D, Grasshopper, Rhino, Photoshop etc) and Augmented Reality (AR) equipment (hololens headsets).

Our alumni who designed and built an Art Shanty project from waste wood (Mady Gulon, Jakob Mahla, Marshall King and Derek Ronding) joined to share their experiences in working with secondary lumber with the students. Wood off-cuts were provided by two non-profits, Better Futures and Keys 4/4 Kids. At the end of the event the structures were disassembled
and materials returned. taken in Rapson Hall by @umnarch

As it is Masters Final Project time again- we are sharing a few memorable projects from last season -
“Darkness Visible: Spaciality, Meaning-Making, and Sublimity in The Dark” is a Masters final project by Phillip Timmons with advisor Benjamin Smith.

“Much has been said and written about the role and value of light in architecture: spaces are well or poorly lit, light “activates” spaces, daylighting shapes orientation and form, we readily discuss light’s temperature, texture, and softness. Considerably less is said about the dark, which is often either an afterthought or an unintended consequence of construction – something that only exists because walls and roofs are insufficiently translucent and, if any number of glass-walled modernist houses are to be believed, should be avoided at all costs.

This project, in order to make a more tangible argument for these virtues, proposes a massive subterranean structure: a sequence of dark spaces composing a small pilgrimage built into the side of an open-pit iron mine in northern Minnesota. These images explore the aspects, effects, and consequences of darkness in architecture, and how to capture and convey those effects where standard architectural drawings, like plans and sections, which often portray spaces as perfectly flat-lit, fail.” taken in Rapson Hall by @umnarch
