One of Ivory Coast’s most beloved street foods is Pain avec condiment (a fresh baguette filled with a savoury mix that may include onions, tomatoes, eggs, fish, avocado, and other local ingredients). In Mauritania, music, drumming, and movement have long been woven into community life, storytelling, and cultural celebrations. In this performance, the drummer’s slow, deliberate gestures resemble the movements of prayer and ritual cleansing, creating a powerful blend of rhythm, spirituality, and tradition.🎥 @kiigëmnitt#MauritanianCulture #AfricanCulture #AfricanTraditions #AfricanHeritage #Afrique by @umojaborn

Long before modern borders divided Africa, the Kanuri people were already connected by a shared history, language, and culture. Descendants of the powerful Kanem–Bornu Empire, one of Africa’s longest-lasting empires, the Kanuri have lived across the Lake Chad Basin for centuries.Today, Kanuri communities are found in northeastern Nigeria (especially Borno and Yobe States), southeastern Niger (Diffa Region), western Chad (around Lake Chad), and parts of northern Cameroon. While colonial borders split their homeland into four countries, their cultural identity has remained remarkably strong.Traditionally, the Kanuri have been farmers, pastoralists, fishermen, traders, and scholars. Their location along major trans-Saharan trade routes helped make them an important centre of commerce and Islamic learning. Rich traditions in dress, hairstyles, jewellery, music, storytelling, and craftsmanship continue to define Kanuri culture today. These remarkable photographs, taken in Nigeria in 1966, preserve a glimpse of traditional Kanuri hairstyles, facial adornments, jewellery, makeup, and tribal marks.📸 Original photos: @vintageafricanwomen#Kanuri #KanemBornu #AfricanHistory #Afrique #Umojaborn by @umojaborn
