This past weekend a group of local growers joined us at @umthombotrust to learn from our guest facilitator Kate from @greenheartedprojects about all things agroforestry or as other local farmers @welliamorganics had named theirs - a KOS BOS! There is something so magical that happens when people come together to learn, share and put their hands in the soil together. We planted a large agroforestry system in the corner of the allotment garden in the hopes of the abundance of fruit feeding some of the youth that comes to the farm. Gardening is so much more than a physical act, we discussed land, mental health, purpose and access to resources and once again all left feeling deeply inspired to grow on.

A massive thank you to Kate for your brilliant teaching, Umthombo funders (Jose’s and @recorrauk ) for helping us gather all the resources we needed, Farmer Kobus and Farmer Erin who helped me(Layla) prepare for the course, Farmer Daniel for the woodchip runs, Farmer Jake from Valley Chickens for sharing tractor knowledge, Alex from Homtini for all his hard work, @getdirtyza for the epic broad fork that always comes in handy and @welliamorganics for the donation of trees and for inspiring it in the first place! And every person on the course who added their love, sweat and tears to the land. by @umthombotrust

For most of the Kurland and Rheenendal EYC this was their first experience of a game drive (@plettgamereserve ) and seeing big cats at the rehabilitation centre @saasa_jukani and the excitement, nerves and awe was palpable! We learnt so much at both places!
Seeing these animals in real life can create curiosity, respect and love for them and that’s what EYC aims to do. Plus having a day out with friends, laughing in the rain and seeing lions for the first time is a great school holiday activity!

School holidays are for hiking! Some of the soccer team and EYC pumped out a 9km hike with a cold dip in the river along the way! Circles in the forest is a famous hike in our backyard but due to pay gates and access not many youth from Rheenendal get to do these walks and feel their place in the magnificent local ecosystem. At the end of the hike we had a fascinating discussion about whether the pay gate is good or not with answers being nuanced and youth challenging their critical thinking skills. The best bit of the day for us as a team was when a young boy at the end of the hike said “that river we swam in goes into the Homtini and that is where all of our houses get their water from”

These simple links and connections through experience create a relationship to the forest and the river that talking about it in our classroom just could not fully achieve.

It was deeply inspiring and special to have these incredible women from numerous organisations including COPAC (Co-operative and Policy Alternative Centre) , @womenonfarms , South African Food Sovereignty Campaign and the @cjcm_chartersa Climate Justice Charter Movement visit us for a farm tour and chat on Friday. We walked through the gardens and the farm, sharing ideas, learning from one another and hopefully building relationships to bring them back here in the future! Thank you Kate from @greenheartedprojects for including us in the tour and for your work.

Today I gardened with the new group in the Homtini Umthombo Allotment garden and I was overwhelmed with inspiration from this young legend, Denovan. The way he talks about himself, how able he is and how much his schooling at Carpe Diem meant to him, how he wishes for young people to seize the day as his school taught him, to try no matter what and seeing him pushing himself into the middle of the garden to plant beetroot - despite his challenges - made me wonder at the absolute resilience of the human spirit and how some of us are so determined and others lose their way and the fire in their spirit.
Come and spend a day in the garden and reignite your fire.

It would be so grand for this to be shared and somehow we get some garden clothes / workwear for this group so they can get even more down and dirty!

We are very excited to create our own Kos Bos agroforestry style plot in our allotment garden in spring with @greenheartedprojects ! Kate and I (Layla) taught a course together in Rheenendal in 2021 and some of the course participants are still growers in the @umthombotrust garden today so it is very special to have Kate coming to teach a two day course in our Umthombo space.

What do football, screen printing, a South African braai, and sustainability have in common? More than you might think!

This July, Recorra Social Impact Lead Ed Van Reenen spent a day at @umthombotrust's Holiday Club, where a jam-packed activity programme is helping young people build confidence, develop new skills, strengthen community connections, and deepen their relationship with nature.

His is biggest takeaway? “…that environmental education is wider and deeper than recycling.”

This week we also had an Umthombo + Farm team day which was such a delight! We love a productive day working towards a common goal - to have a thriving kos Bos (food forest) in our allotment garden! In October we are welcoming @greenheartedprojects to our space to run a two day workshop and together we will plant all a food forest that will provide for the youth who frequent the farm!
