Why is British wool so important? Swipe through to learn a little about the history of British wool, why its so special and how YOU can help.

Sometimes life gives you lemons and you find yourself on crutches for Halloween.

A quick dig through the wardrobe (who is still buying polyester costumes that will get one wear?) and out stepped Bert, gloriously portrayed by @official_dick_van_dyke in the 1964 film, Mary Poppins.

Served with a lil bounty of British wool, of course:

🦺 is my latest FO, a Vacation Vest by @parknknit using some lovely leftover 100% Wensleydale held with a BFL/Shetland mix. The colourway is Je Suis Prest, my latest colourway for @burnfootwool - you can find this colour on their website on a lovely blend of their own traceable Scottish wool

And, of course, my crutches have had their own share of of woolly additions.

What are you going as for Halloween this year? by @unaroo.wool

A first outing for my Vacation Vest by @parknknit using Je Suis Prest, my latest colourway for the wonderful @burnfootwool (although this one is alternating rows of some leftover British wool from my stash; 100% Wensleydale and a lovely BFL/Shetland mix).

Spoiler: there might be more stages between sheep and skein than you thought.

There are so many skilful steps that go into turning a sheep’s fleece into a wonderfully woolly product, each requiring care, knowledge and skill.

This is, of course, not the only route, but it is one journey. And it’s the one that I was lucky enough to see down in Bradford at the @britishwool depot and Haworth Scouring Co. as part of the @nationalsheep Next Generation Symposium earlier this Wool Month (ft. some clips from the Evanton depot and a cameo of @thesheepgamevlog)

Does this woolly journey surprise you? Would you like a closer look at any of the stages? by @unaroo.wool

Settle in for your 70 second summary of BW226, the latest @britishwoolfarm auction which took place today(!), Tuesday 20th October.

It’s been so interesting to watch the demand fluctuate over the past few months. I think it’s important to look at the bigger picture and see how far the prices have come on in the last 12 months, the way demand shifts on a global scale, and how much creativity there is in the British wool space.

How are you feeling about wool prices right now? by @unaroo.wool

One year ago, I packed up yarn, gridwalls and, yes, that’s a whole vintage writing desk(!) and headed home from my last yarn show as Unaroo Designs.

It’s amazing to think back on the adventures I’ve had since that lovely @glasgowschoolofyarn

I remember wondering what the future had in store. Of course, the end of 2025 was busy with closing the business and hitting that incredible £1,000 donation for @mndscotland 🙏

But I don’t know if I would have believed you a year ago if you’d told me about all of the incredible opportunities I would have after that. From @britishwool visits to a @nationalsheep Next Generation Symposium, conversations with so many farmers and wool producers willing to share their woolly stories to the number of sheep I have met, and so so much more, it has been an amazing adventure.

I’m lucky to be able to explore my love of British wool, and I am forever grateful that you’re following along on this journey with me. by @unaroo.wool

Aside from a stationary essential, what is a staple?

In wool terms, the staple length tells us how long the fibre is. This information can inform how a wool will feel, behave and even how it might be spun.

In British wool, the staple length varies a fair amount, from some of the longest staples like Lincoln Longwool (15-30 cm) to the shortest, such as the Dorset Down (5-8cm).

A wee peek at the story behind my latest colourway for @burnfootwool called Je Suis Prest.

Taking naming inspiration from the Fraser motto, my wonderful mum’s clan, this yarn is to celebrate Wool Month (October) and the threads that connect us all.

It’s the perfect kaleidoscope for cosy autumn adventures.

Video ft a peek of Peter MacDonald, the tartan historian, who I was lucky enough to meet earlier this year at my local museum!

"In Scotland, we’re surrounded by a world of moss and heather, peat under wide open skies.

When I sat down to create this colourway, I kept coming back to tartan and the way wool has played such a key role in our history.

We are connected by this thread. This yarn plays with that, taking inspiration not from one sett, but from the rich, earthy tones associated with rural life across the country, from the Borders to the Highlands. A kaleidoscope that invites you to look a little closer.

With so much history behind us, I know that whatever comes next, Je Suis Prest."

Have you ever seen the micron range of a fleece and wondered what it means?

One micron is one-millionth of a metre, perfect for measuring the thickness of wool fibre.

It’s just one clue you can use to understand how your wool will behave.

The latest British Wool auction took place yesterday, 6th October.

BW225 brought a very similar performance to the previous sale, right down to same weight of wool offered!

All of this is good news. Better still, clearance hopped up to a very healthy 97.5%, showing strong demand.

It was particularly interesting to watch my first sale as it happened yesterday. Would you like to know more about the auction process?

Thank you for having me @britishwoolfarm by @unaroo.wool
