Congratulations to Rhinology research fellow Nathan Barefoot on his newest publication in the International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology! Nathan and the UNC Rhinology team found that simply suctioning out the thick, adherent mucus that builds up in the sinuses of patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) led to a significant jump in nasal nitric oxide levels, a molecule critical for clearing mucus and fighting off infection in the airway.

Congratulations to UNC medical student Elena Quinones Del Cid and her mentor, Dr. Thompson, on their new video report published in Otology & Neurotology! 🎉

Their video demonstrates an alternative placement for a robotic cochlear implant insertion device, giving surgeons a clearer view of the surgical site during the procedure. Better visibility can support greater precision and success in cochlear implant surgery.

Congratulations to medical students Ismail Khaderi and Abdullah Saleh for their work with Drs. Nazineen Kandahari, David Strum, and Trevor Hackman on the publication of their article, "Development of the TORS Severe Outcome Score: A Preoperative Risk Stratification Tool for Postoperative Morbidity in Oropharyngeal Cancer," in Oral Oncology.

Using data from 1,592 patients, the team developed the TORS Severe Outcome Score (TSOS), a novel preoperative risk stratification tool designed to identify patients at increased risk for severe postoperative morbidity following transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for oropharyngeal cancer. The findings may help inform patient counseling, surgical decision-making, and multidisciplinary risk assessment.
