If there was a ‘bird of paradise,’ it was the Indian peacock.Centuries earlier, Vaishnav traditions had depicted the peacock as a witness to the playfulness of the Lord, in Gokul as well as in Vrindavan. A harbinger of monsoons, the spectacular dance, the incredibly beautiful train, and the strident call have stimulated poetry, art, and music through the ages.In Jaipur, the peacock is an unalienable symbol of heritage architecture. It is rather nice looking , even if slithery. On a lazy summer noon, it will lie motionless among the leaf litter. Never really seen it behaving like “a narrow fellow in the grass”.The Red Sand Boa, Eryx johnii is a non-venomous snake, a constrictor, related to the mighty pythons. It is red/brown/wet sand in colour that helps it camouflage amidst the leaf litter perfectly. A blunt head and a blunt tail, lot of people believe it has two heads, hence ‘do-muhi’. Heavy beasts, one of them nearly bent my snake callipers so it had to be picked up by hand and let into the safety of the scrub lest the neighbours dogs got too interested. They are docile enough. One Sunday morning, in the Jaipur studio, the incessant calls of palm squirrels took us looking. Yes, amidst the litter was a Red Sand Boa. A small one, innocent even. One squirrel, was way too inquisitive. It came more and more near. In flash which we saw or thought or thought we did, the squirrel was in its coils. 15 minutes and there was no squirrel . Curiosity killed the … squirrel.Another afternoon, I remember, I was running a fever and taken a day off. Summer afternoon and Ravi who looks after the household, woke me up and asked me to step outside. A Red Sand Boa was merrily chomping down on an Asian Pied Starling. A bird in hand, so as to speak.These snakes are being seen less and less. They are smuggled and sold and this being India, we attribute magical/ medicinal/ aphrodisiac properties to everything and anything.Denizen of sandy, crumbly soil, semi-arid cropland and scrub. If you have travelled in Rajasthan, you might have heard of Kachri ka chutney. Kachri is a wild Cucurbit (Gourds, Cucumber etc are members of the family Cucurbitaceae. Lauki, Pumpkin, Ash Gourd, Bitter Gourd, Ridged Gourd…).Kachri, Cucumis pubescens is a wild creeper from the arid/ semi- arid regions. It is reputed to be protein rich and a great meat tenderiser. And it makes a fine Chutney - the well know ‘Lehsun ka Chutney’ is Kachri (dried), salt, Garlic and dry red chillies, crushed to a paste on a sil batta (grinding stone & pestle). It goes down so very well with roti, especially Bajra Rotis steeped in Ghee. Make it as hot as you can handle. Add some amchur if you will.Night halts in the Desert National Park or in Tal Chappar invariably sees Kachri chutney and bajre ka roti.
