One person can remind you why you keep making art. After screening at the Richmond International Film Festival, I went back to a school where I had taught fifteen years ago. Walking through the metal detectors and the noise of the hallway, I found myself wondering whether what I had to say mattered to anyone in that room. Then a young Iraqi man walked up to me. He told me what he had seen inspired him, shook my hand, and thanked me for coming. That encounter anchor my latest essay: a reflection on surviving the kind of heartbreak that has no funeral, watching our elders slow down, turning forty, and the invisible history we carry into every room we enter. "The Life We Bring Into the Room" asks what those experiences cost us, what they teach us to make, and who might recognize themselves in our work when we simply refuse to lie about life. Young, broke, and obsessed with the craft. That was me in 2015. Monday Film School is what I made from those fragments, told the way memory actually works, not in a straight line. Everyone has a place like this. A school, a block, a job, a room that made you who you arethat no longer exists. What's yours? Tell me in the comments. @imranjkhan 👇

To learn filmmaking, I went halfway around the world to NYU Tisch in Singapore. This short is my love letter to that campus, that city, and every place that shapes an artist before it disappears. A film about a place erased from the map, premiering in the state that made me. Virginia is where the circle closes.

BTS Monday Film School. A film about what travel teaches us, what we carry with us, and what we discover when we step outside what we know.

For VCU alum Cameron Harris (’12), storytelling has always been about making people feel seen. Now he’s telling a piece of his own story through his short documentary “Monday Film School,” which will be featured this fall at the 15th annual Richmond International Film Festival. 🎬

Long before I was making films in Singapore, Thailand, and Ukraine or trying to figure out how to build a life around storytelling, I was a kid from Richmond who wanted to see more of the world. There is something especially meaningful about bringing Monday Film School home.

Thank you to Richmond Magazine for telling the story behind the film, the years of teaching, traveling, creating, starting over, and continuing to make the work even when there was no guarantee anyone would ever see it.

This September, Monday Film School returns to Richmond as an Official Selection of the Richmond International Film Festival.

One thing I told Richmond Magazine has stayed with me:

“If you have a dream, a goal, a desire, if you are not dead, it can still happen.”

I believe that more now than ever.
