Not just the standalone rack compressors, not just the 500 series compressors. Literally the bus compressors going all the way back to 1970s originated as DBX 202 VCA’s. Prior to THAT corporation existing, the SSL’s BUS compressor VCA was designed by David blackmer and even since shifting to THAT corporation, the VCAS in the current bus comps are THAT 2181 which are direct successors to the 202/blackmer, the 2181 is literally referred to as the blackmer VCA, there’s really no such thing as an “SSL BUS COMPRESSOR” it’s a David blackmer compressor that just happens to be housed by solid state logic. I’m not saying David blackmer is better than ssl, I’m not saying ssl is trash because they use a DBX VCA chip, I’m saying it’s not as prestigious as you think. Any electrical engineer will tell you out of all the compressors, even FET compressors, VCAs are the cheapest to make and make well because they don’t need transformers, they don’t need any expensive components, the VCA chips are cheaply made and they handle 90% of the sound, the only thing ssl does is deliver you that sound after the VCA at the highest quality. Understand the components inside your hardware, that’s why they say it’s the ear, not the gear, the ear is not fooled by high price tags, sound is sound by @unclemuddyduddy

It’s a lot better than saying “oh some dude didn’t like my art, so I conformed to what he liked and now I’m successful” because when you die, that person now has that part of your journey, instead of you learning it organically, your path was influenced and shifted by someone else’s opinion.
