Alvin Hayes, Jr. is an accomplished jazz musician and multi-instrumentalist who graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School (Poly High). He plays all types of saxophones, clarinets, flutes, oboes, and English horns

Hayes is widely recognized for his resilience as a stroke survivor. After suffering a severe stroke that temporarily halted his ability to play music, he underwent a grueling recovery process to regain his motor functions. He successfully returned to the music world, releasing smooth jazz albums like Festiva (2016) and The LBC (2019)—the latter serving as a deeply personal homage to his hometown of Long Beach

To celebrate his roots, he collaborated closely with fellow Long Beach Poly alumni, including musicians Arthur Brown Jr. and Bill “Swoop” Pittman, to produce his music. In addition to his musical career, Hayes serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Stroke Support Association (SSA), where he helps inspire and support other survivors on their own roads to recovery. by @uncleyont

Joe Perez is an alumnus of Long Beach Poly High School (Class of 1971) and a multi-instrumentalist who plays the saxophone, clarinet, and flute.

Among the Long Beach Poly band community, he is famously remembered for a dramatic incident during a 1971 halftime performance of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. Perez and fellow band member John Merrell were leading the band when a crew member attempted to simulate the overture's signature cannon fire using a homemade setup fueled by oxygen and acetylene. The gas mixture was incorrect, resulting in a large flame shooting across half the field directly over the heads of the musicians, causing most of the band to stop playing in shock

Later in his musical career, Perez contributed his woodwind talents to various productions, including performing saxophone, clarinet, and flute for theatrical arrangements such as the 1993 urban drama play Queen's Garden alongside Asian jazz master Mark Izu.

Joe Perez was probably one of the most talented saxophone players out of Long Beach poly. He also was a studio musician for a lot of jazz groups along with the brother Johnson.

In high school he would play at a lot of the assemblies on stage at our auditorium along with Brenda Aoki

Yes, I’m very sorry to have to be the messenger, but I got a message today that Joe Perez has passed away. This is a very Sad Day For Poly Jackrabbits Class of 1971 by @uncleyont

The fight started Monday at lunch at Stephen junior high school and ended Thursday on Santa Fe. Across from the Hamburger Stand the reason why the fight lasted so long I couldn’t let him get the best of me so I brought a lunchpail and put in work. I didn’t win, but he never wanted to fight me again took too long. by @uncleyont
