[#0104] Cubone
Illustrator: Sumiyoshi Kizuki
Set: 2015 XY Breakthrough
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
💭 Thoughts: “Cubone, Cubone.. probably the saddest lore in the world of Pokémon. The skull of Cubone has become a fundamental part of his identity as it is said he wears the skull of its deceased mother as a helmet for protection, and comfort.
In this card Sumiyoshi has brilliantly depicted the sadness going through Cubone’s body. He’s looking for more comfort as he hugs his bone, probably because the amusement park he’s in is filled with happy families.
Until now, you might wonder why I haven’t given this card a 5/5 given the superlatives. However, one thing I did not like is the technique used, as it someone doesn’t feel like the illustrations blend in with eachother - ‘just’ the story.”

[#0240] Magby
Illustrator: Mina Nakai
Set: 2023 Scarlet & Violet Ancient Roar
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
💭 Thoughts: “Honestly, when it comes to character design I’ll always put Magby over Magmar, and that’s why it’s such a shame it’s been twelve years (!) since the last Magby card. Luckily, Mina Nakai has done the Pokémon justice..
.. with an incredible Illustration Rare in the Japanese Ancient Roar (and the International version in Paradox Rift). The technique used is looking great, and the relaxed vibe of the Magby adds something to the card. The only reason I don’t rate it with five stars is because I believe it’s lacking some liveliness in the illustration. Perhaps some other Pokémon? I don’t know.. what do you think?”

[#0078] Gengar & [#0778] Mimikyu
Illustrator: @mitsuhiro_arita
Set: 2019 Sun & Moon Team Up
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
💭 Thoughts: “Here is a card that - in my eyes - perfectly suits Halloween as it the dreamt duo for the occassion: Gengar x Mimikyu. The way they both stare at your soul gives me chills..
.. and no, I am not a Mitsuhiro Arita fanboy (although I do like his art), but lately a lot of cards I choose to showcase on the channel have his name written on the card, haha. Pure coincidence! The illustration itself is pure class in my eyes.. what do you think?”

[#0232] Donphan
Illustrator: @mitsuhiro_arita
Set: 2002 Japanese McDonald’s Promo
Rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
💭 Thoughts: “I did not know about this card until yesterday, but as it feels like we are in the Johto vibes lately I could not go through to the next region without having put Donphan in the spotlight. It’s certain that this has become my all-time favorite Donphan..
.. just look at it. Annoyed, pissed off, either as he missed his target or because he couldn’t stop using rollout in time. How cool is it even that it seems to have been obtainable via McDonald’s packs back in 2002! I want one.. but gut feeling is that it’ll be hard to obtain, haha.”
Have a good day everyone!

[#0214]] Heracross
Illustrator: Satoshi Shirai
Set: 2019 Sun & Moon Cosmic Eclipse
Rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
💭 Thoughts: “To me, this is the absolute banger of Sun & Moon’s Cosmic Eclipse set. It’s bizar that it was released prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.. it feels like ages, and at the same time it’s only been four years..
As some of you probably know by now, Heracross is my favorite Pokémon. This all started back when I played my first Pokémon game.. Pokémon Gold. I don’t know why I like it that much, as it’s just an oversized beetle basically, but oh well.. haha.
As for the design: it’s one of a kind. He’s angry, on the move, and ready to annhilate his opponent. I love the technique used, and bonus points for it being an uncommon. 10/10. Arigato, Satoshi 🤙🏼”

[#0064] Alakazam
Illustrator: Ken Sugimori
Set: 1999 Base Set Unlimited
Rating: ꜱᴡɪᴘᴇ ʀɪɢʜᴛ ➡️
💭 Anecdote: “Alright, at first glance, you might think: ‘hold on, Uncommon Candy.. now that’s not an uncommon’.. and you right, it isn’t. But the condition this card was when I possessed it should had probably labeled it ‘HDMG’, a.k.a. ‘Heavily Damaged’.
Flashback to the year 2000: my dad asked me if I would like to trade my Charizard (1999 Base Set Unlimited) for an Alakazam with a kid of a father’s colleague of mine. For me, that was an immediate yes, as I had two Charizards (in Mint condition) at the time and for me the Alakazam was the holy grail of Pokémon Trading Card Game. Little did I know how valuable the Charizard would become, but ok..
Gave the card to my dad the following day, and when he would come back home I couldn’t wait to get my hands on that… horrible, in terrible condition Alakazam. My god, what did I feel bad for that trade, but I acted as if I was very happy because.. well, I don’t know why: didn’t want to put my dad in a ‘difficult’ position to ask to trade it back, but I should have. The sides would come off almost entirely.. ugh. Little trauma. But alright, it happens, haha.
As for the art: I like it, but pure for nostalgic reasons.. which probably is the case for almost any card of the earliest sets!”
What was your worst trade in your life?
P.S. I have added an ‘Uncommon Dex’ to specify my ratings, but as with everything as I do on this channel: it is work in progress!
