Over the summer, we're speaking to #UNCPharmacy students with exciting summer internships. Hear from upcoming PY3 student Kate Givens about her experience as a Managed Care Pharmacy Intern at Centene Corporation's specialty pharmacy, Acaria Health!

"At my internship, I am gaining exposure to managed care pharmacy principles across specialty disease states such as hemophilia, cystic fibrosis, and autoimmune conditions. One project focuses on developing a clinical education and training framework that supports both internal standardization and external partnerships. I also contribute to biologic and biosimilar initiatives aimed at reducing health plan and patient costs while maintaining strong clinical outcomes, and I support projects involving data analysis, specialty pharmacy operations, and account management.

What excites me most about this internship is seeing how data can be transformed into action. I've enjoyed learning how research, real-world evidence, and analytics drive decisions that improve patient outcomes while managing healthcare costs.

This internship has given me a firsthand look at the breadth of opportunities within managed care pharmacy. Through projects involving specialty pharmacy, biologic and biosimilar strategies, clinical account management, project management, and healthcare analytics, I've seen how data, innovation, and collaboration come together to improve patient care while reducing costs. The experience has strengthened my interest in managed care pharmacy and provided valuable skills and perspectives that I will continue to build on throughout my pharmacy career!" by @uncpharmacy

#UNCPharmacy associate professor Lindsey James is leading a team of researchers from the School of Pharmacy, @UNCLineberger, and the @VAInstitute to develop more effective treatments for cancer patients.

Supported by a five-year R01 grant from the @NationalCancerInstitute, James and her team are developing compounds that help eliminate cancer growth that conventional drugs cannot target.

Big news! #UNCPharmacy and @DukeUniversity have received a competitive renewal of their @NIHgov-funded UNC-Duke Collaborative Clinical Pharmacology Postdoctoral Training Program (T32), securing more than $4 million in funding through 2030.

Led by principal investigators including #UNCPharmacy Interim Dean Kim Brouwer, Paul Watkins (@UNC.SOM, @UNCPublicHealth, #UNCPharmacy), and Daniel Gonzalez (@DukeSchoolofMedicine), this renewal reflects the program's longstanding success in preparing the next generation of clinical pharmacologists!
