For nearly 30 years, I’ve worked in one of the most specialized parts of the water industry.

What started as sharing hot taps, line stops, and valve inserts has grown into something much bigger.

Today, Under Pressure USA is about documenting the history, engineering, technology, and the people behind the underground infrastructure that keeps our communities running.

That mission now has a home.

This is just the beginning.

12” valve insert.
Live line.
Pressure on.

36” tap on a 36” main.

Full send.
Full bore.
Full consequences.

When that cutter bites, there’s no “my bad.”
Just pressure, torque, and men who don’t flinch.

Most people scroll past pressure.
We step into it.

You can build the best distribution system in the world.

But if you don't have enough water to put into it, none of it matters.

Drought happens. Communities grow. Demand changes. A reliable water source has to support more than just what a community needs today.

Surface water isn't automatically the “good” source or the “bad” source. Neither is groundwater.

They're different—and those differences matter when raw water has to become drinking water.

Someone tells you an area normally has 70 PSI.

Okay.

But where was that measured?

If your jobsite is 50 feet higher or lower, elevation alone could account for roughly a 22 PSI difference.

Sometimes the pressure reading makes a lot more sense once you look at the terrain.

Groundwater exists below the surface in saturated soil, sand, gravel and rock.

When an underground formation can store and move enough water for us to use, we call it an aquifer.

And wells give us a way to reach it.

Raw water isn't the same everywhere.

Surface water interacts with rainfall, runoff and the watershed around it. Groundwater moves through soil and rock and can pick up dissolved minerals along the way.

Where water comes from matters.

For fresh water, every foot of elevation is worth about 0.433 PSI.

Move 100 feet higher or lower and, all else being equal, you’re looking at roughly a 43 PSI difference.

That’s not a small change.

Before the pumps, water towers and miles of distribution pipe, there's already a major decision shaping the system:

Where the water comes from.

Different sources can lead to very different water systems.

Rainfall changes. Streamflow changes. Water demand changes.

Reservoirs give us a way to store raw water when it’s available so that supply can be available when it’s needed.

You could be standing directly above a major source of groundwater and never know it.

Aquifers can store and move usable groundwater underground, while wells give us a way to reach it.
