I went to see my grandma to make sure she wasn’t alone today. She made me deviled eggs. She served them to me.

That woman is a WIFE. And Cleveland loved her down.

In his final days, he lost quite a bit of weight and couldn’t wear his wedding band. He had very little air in his lungs and asked her to put his ring back on. What. A. Love.

I kept half expecting Cleveland to enter the back door, as per his usual. He didn’t. Which is insane.

The apartment smells slightly different in his absence but it still feels like he’s there. My uncle was sitting in his chair in the living room- it’s fitting because he’s helping take care of Shirley in Cleveland’s absence.

Some stuff has been cleared out and I can’t believe they raised 3 rusty oversized boys in that two bedroom apartment.
Solely on Cleveland’s income, while Shirley handled the household. Cleveland was LITERALLY one of a kind.

It felt good being there. Memories. Smells. History.

When his health started to take a turn, I remember being by his bedside, and me staring him down because I was trying to absorb everything about him. He felt me looking at him and turned to me and said, “Karisma, I’m not going to die while you’re here”. This was weeks before his actual passing. He kept his word because on 6/20/2025, we put him on hospice. On 6/21/2025, Shirley called me with updates and I told her I’d be there soon so I could relieve her so she can go home to shower. Less than an hour later she called me hysterical to let me know he passed. Even when you “know”, nothing prepares you for this kind of loss. NOTHING.

He kept his word- he didn’t go while I was there.

I HATE talking about him in past tense. Because how are you not here Cleveland?!

I miss my Grandpa terribly but I have survived the day. by @undercoversnob
