DIVERSE/CITY 5 at Underdog Bookstore, a collaboration between The Arroyo Arts Collective and Underdog Bookstore, featuring artists Shirley Huang and Betty Wan Hamada. Sept. 19, 2026 - Nov. 14th, 2026. Curated by A. Laura Brody allthingswillbe (aka Shirley Huang) is an Asian American artist inspired by nature, stories, and observed life. Born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley, she enjoys creating images that feel accessible and reflective, familiar yet unexpected. Her mixed media portfolio spans animal illustration, food art, and miniature paintings, with work shown at venues across California, and in Japan, Taiwan, and Canada. She paints pet portraits and more on commission. Betty Wan Hamada, a mixed media visual artist, creates collages and assemblages, sculptures and shadowboxes. She gathers swatches of life's discards, excesses and detritus, all sorts of ephemera, images and materials, then alters and incorporates them into a rebirth. Wan is a native Angeleno who adores travel around the world to explore art and culture. She has exhibited in many California venues, including San Francisco, New Mexico, New York and internationally in Australia. This is their first show together at Underdog Bookstore. Underground Bookstore 312 S. Myrtle Avenue, Monrovia, CA 91016 Through diverse books and inclusive events, Underdog Bookstore aims to amplify underrepresented voices and provide a safe space to explore, connect, and celebrate the wonder of literacy and learning. The Arroyo Arts Collective is a grassroots, community-based organization of artists, poets, musicians, crafts persons and supporters of the creative community in Northeast Los Angeles. https://arroyoartscollective.org/diverse-city/ @arroyoartscollective @underdogbooks @a.laurabrody @allthingswillbe #bettywanhamada by @underdogbookstore

Join a new group penpal project meeting once a month to write letters to incarcerated LGBTQ+ people 💌 @powerblossoms is an abolitionist organization bringing together queer and trans people on both sides of prison walls in the fight against hierarchies and State oppression. For incarcerated trans and queer people, penpal correspondence is often the only connection they have to people on the outside. LGBTQ+ people also face increased isolation within prisons—such as being placed in solitary confinement “for their own protection.” This makes having outside support such as these penpods all the more important. 🗓 Wednesday, October 21st, 6-7PM 📍312 S Myrtle Ave, Monrovia #PowerBlossoms #PenPals #LetterWriting #IndieBookstore #CommunityCare by @underdogbookstore

Thank you to everyone who joined us during Banned Books Week to protect the freedom to read! 📚 Together we wrote over 100 postcards to our local reps asking them to vote no against federal book banning bills, celebrated the stories they don’t want us to read, and spread awareness about book banning to even the youngest readers and storytime listeners. While Banned Books Week may be over, you can still shop our selection of banned books by LGBTQ+ and BIPOC authors in store, join our Banned Books Club to read a new banned or challenged book each month, or support our Free Queer Banned Books initiative to put those books into the hands of young readers. 📸: @vwritesap #BannedBooksWeek #FreedomToRead #ReadBannedBooks #BannedBooksClub #FreeQueerBannedBook taken in Underdog Bookstore by @underdogbookstore

Choose your own adventure 🧭 I've got art n stuff at my two-person show thru Nov 14th at @underdogbookstore in collaboration with Betty Wan Hamada @a.laurabrody @arroyoartscollective ! Proud to be showing at a community space and shop with a focus on BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, neurodiverse, and underrepresented authors for all ages. Underdog Bookstore is in @oldtownmonrovia across the street from the #monrovialibrary Diverse/City 5  Now thru Nov 14th Underground Bookstore 312 S. Myrtle Avenue, Monrovia, CA 91016 Reformatting... 🔄 For my second duo show, I had to get crafty. The exhibition includes original artwork but also some 1-of-1 #mixedmedia embellished reproductions. Among the pieces on view are giclee prints embellished with materials including oil pastel, spray paint, patterned paper, watercolor, and iridescent paint. I had fun rethinking how I could incorporate old supplies I had hanging around the studio.  I made some 1-of-1 customized notebooks for writing / sketching to sell during the show run 📚 Depending on the design, materials include: giclee print, spray paint, fabric, Japanese workbook paper, paper (interior envelopes), ink (stamp on giclee print bookmark). These are moving quickly, but I might make a few more! Detail of the "Painted Wolves" 1-of-1 customized notebook showing spray painted giclee print on both sides, interior storage envelopes, interior paper design, and stamped bookmark #artdetail 🐺 Some of the homies who joined us for the opening (curator Laura on top right) THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT 🫶 Diverse/City 5  Now thru Nov 14th Underground Bookstore 312 S.
