In class this week, we were tasked with creating our own “Cultural Introduction Personal Poem” inspired by Where I’m from - by George Ella Lyon in our Techniques Counseling Class. This is the finalized poem, called “I AM.”

Even though I have created a few poems throughout childhood and adulthood THIS has been my SECOND favorite poem l ever written 🦋✍🏾

I hope this semester has been kind to you 🦋, and it’s moving smoothly through last week’s assignments and finals. As this semester wraps up, I wanted to share my honor’s contract course portfolio I finished during my senior year in my undergraduate degree. My portfolio highlighted how Black Grandmothers are the glue that keeps Black Families together. This was in dedication of my late grandmother, Juanita F. Thompson 🤍🕊️

“Rooted in Black Love” was inspired by George Ella Lyon’s poem “Where I’m From,” exploring, through symbolism, the beauty, and complexity of young Black love and the ways it can grow, heal, and remain deeply rooted in the idea of sacredness and connection through difficult, transitional times 🤎🌱 by @underrateddej.art

This poem is called “Broken Promises,” representing an ending that ultimately becomes a new beginning. I chose a rainbow theme to symbolize overcoming the storm and finally reaching a place of healing, hope, and peace. The clear skies, beautiful clouds, and peeking sunlight reflect the brighter days that come after healing because of a lost connection. This is currently a typed draft, but I plan to recreate it with visuals to further bring the meaning and emotions of the poem to life. by @underrateddej.art
