🌍✨ “Culture continues to be a source of hope, a path to dialogue, and a thread that helps us heal and reunite communities.” With these words, European Commissioner for Culture, Youth & Sport @glenn_micallef opened #MONDIACULT2025, which concluded Wednesday with the adoption of the Mondiacult 2025 Outcome Document, building on the historic 2022 Mexico Declaration. The conference gathered over 2,500 participants from 163 countries, including 118 Ministers and Vice-Ministers, 90 intergovernmental organisations, and 100+ NGOs, advancing a global cultural agenda rooted in human rights, inclusion, and sustainability. Dedicated spaces — Mondiayouth and Ágora Cívica — amplified the voices of youth and civil society. 🇪🇺 The EU played a strong role throughout: ✨ Commissioner @glenn_micalleff engaged in plenaries, thematic sessions, and side events, meeting counterparts and championing culture. ✨ The @europeanparliament CULT Committee Delegation — Chair @Nela.Riehl and Vice-Chair @DianaRiba — joined cultural leaders, bringing the EU perspective to the debates and strengthening multilateralism. ✨ EU civil society actively participated, contributing to discussions and enriching the debates. ✨ The EU & UNESCO co-organised a side event on Culture & Sustainable Development. ✨ The first UNESCO Global Report on Cultural Policies was launched, co-funded by the EU. ✨ EU–UNESCO partnership, including initiatives in Mosul, the Caribbean, and the Western Balkans, along with the Culture|2030 Indicators, was highlighted. ✨ The EU reaffirmed its commitment as a proud party to the 2005 Convention on Cultural Diversity. 🤝 Together, the #EU and @unesco are putting culture at the heart of policymaking — building a sustainable, creative, and resilient future. 💙🎭 by @unesco_eu

From Yemen to Brussels — resilience, in every frame. 📸Yemeni Livelihoods: Resilience at Work opened at the EEAS on 2 June, bringing powerful images of hope and recovery to the heart of EU institutions.Through the EU–UNESCO–UNDP partnership, over 11,000 young Yemenis have built new economic pathways. 🎙️ UNESCO spoke at the CULT Committee hearing of the European Parliament in Brussels on the future of the Audiovisual Policy Framework and creative freedom.We are witnessing a profound shift in how information is created and consumed with the rise of digital creators as key actors in the public information space, especially for younger audiences. According to studies, 78 % of Europeans follow at least one content creator and for young audiences, they are the principal access point for news.Regulation must evolve with this reality but it must remain proportionate, coherent, and grounded in a clear understanding of these new ecosystems. At the heart of the debate: how to protect freedom of expression, ensure access to reliable information, and support media and information literacy at scale.Creators are not traditional media — and policy must reflect that distinction, while still safeguarding the integrity of our information space. UNESCO and the EU invest in journalism to prevent conflict.In today’s interconnected world, information shapes trust, understanding, and decision-making. When information systems weaken, trust collapses, rumours spread and conflict follows.Independent journalism, reliable information and informed citizens are among the most powerful tools to prevent crises — and far less costly than responding to them. Just 15 days of global military spending would cover an entire year of investment needed to support public-interest journalism worldwide.On World Press Freedom Day, under the theme of media and peace, UNESCO and the European Union reaffirm their strong partnership to protect freedom of expression and strengthen access to information worldwide.Through EU-funded UNESCO initiatives, this partnership is making a tangible impact: tackling disinformation and hate speech through Social Media 4 Peace; supporting journalists’ livelihoods and access to essential services in Afghanistan; advancing human rights–based governance of digital platforms globally; and strengthening trust in media as a public good across South-East Europe.
