Lepheana Mokapane is proving that change can start with one voice.

A herdboy from Mantšonyane, Thaba-Tseka, Lepheana is using lessons from his training under the @unfpa_syp Programme, supported by UNFPA and implemented by @helplesotho, to challenge harmful attitudes and promote respectful relationships among his fellow herdboys.

His message is simple: what we once considered “normal” can, and must, change.
By empowering young people with knowledge, we can build communities where respect, dignity and equality become the norm.

SAFEGUARDING DIGNITY. STRENGTHENING ACCOUNTABILITY.

Today, UNFPA in Lesotho joined government officials and UN partners at UN House for the review of the Government’s Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (PSEAH) Guidelines.

Delivering welcoming remarks on behalf of UNFPA, Assistant Representative Ms Mot’selisi Phakisi, reaffirmed that preventing sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment is a non-negotiable operational standard for UNFPA and the wider United Nations system.

Beyond the review, UNFPA remains committed to supporting the adoption, rollout, capacity-building and monitoring of the guidelines.

“End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights!” the theme for the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, and one that carries particular significance for Lesotho, where child marriage, adolescent pregnancy and barriers to reproductive healthcare continue to affect the futures of young girls.

I believe that one of the greatest investments we can make in girls is knowledge. Girls must be taught to understand their bodies, recognise their sexual and reproductive health rights, and know that they have choices concerning their health and their futures. Girls must be empowered to pursue their education.

Menstrual health education is very important. Beyond understanding menstruation, it is about challenging misinformation, breaking stigma, promoting bodily autonomy and empowering girls to make informed decisions. At Leratong Community Center, I had the privilege of engaging young people in this important conversation. It was an incredibly enriching session, and I walked away having learned just as much as I shared.

I believe girls are most empowered when they know and understand themselves. Investing in girls’ rights must begin with ensuring that every girl has the knowledge, dignity and opportunity to determine the course of her own life. 🇱🇸

LET GIRLS BE GIRLS. LET GIRLS DREAM. LET GIRLS THRIVE.

At just 14, Pont’so’s childhood took a different turn. Married while still in Grade 6, she faced responsibilities no girl should have to carry.

Her story reminds us why we must act.

This International Day of the Girl Child, under the theme “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights,” let us stand together to protect every girl’s childhood, keep girls in school, and ensure they have the freedom and opportunity to shape their own futures.

Every girl deserves a childhood, an education, a voice and a future full of possibilities.

End child marriage. Invest in girls. Change the future.

It is with great honour and an even greater sense of responsibility that I officially step into my role as the @unfpalesotho Menstrual Health and Hygiene Champion for the girls and women of Lesotho. 🧡

Since 2017, I have dedicated part of my life’s work to fighting period poverty across Southern Africa. Through the years, I have been fortunate to occupy different platforms, and I have always believed that whatever influence, voice or opportunity I am given must serve a purpose greater than myself. I have always wanted the girls and women who come after us to inherit a world with fewer barriers than the one we found. And perhaps that is why this appointment means so much to me.

I think about how many fears girls and women are taught to carry. Fear of judgement. Fear of speaking up. Fear of taking up space. Fear of being misunderstood. And somewhere along the way, many girls are introduced to menstruation through secrecy, shame and misinformation, until they begin to fear something their own bodies naturally do. We already have enough fears to overcome as girls and women. Fear of our own bodies should not be one of them. NO!

I believe education is one of the most powerful instruments of liberation. Because when a girl understands her body, she begins to reclaim her confidence. When she understands her menstrual cycle, she can replace uncertainty with knowledge. And when we create environments where menstruation can be discussed openly, we begin to dismantle generations of silence and shame. But our work cannot end with education alone. We must also confront the inequalities that leave girls without menstrual products, safe sanitation facilities, appropriate healthcare and the dignity they deserve.

Menstruation should never determine how confidently a girl participates in her education, her community, her ambitions or her own life.

I am incredibly honoured to officially step into my new role as UNFPA Lesotho’s Menstrual Health and Hygiene Champion. 🧡 This is a great continuation of a journey I began years ago, now with a bigger platform and an even greater responsibility. @unfpalesotho @unfpa

“As girls and women, we already navigate enough fears in this world. Fear of our own bodies should never be one of them.”

I look forward to using this platform to replace fear with knowledge and shame with confidence through menstrual health education and awareness, while supporting initiatives working to end period poverty in Lesotho.

Deep in the mountains of Lesotho, a powerful message was shared: menstruation is nature, and every girl deserves to experience it with dignity.

At Hamalapane, Sanqebethu, UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, together with the Ministry of Gender, Youth and Social Development, brought girls, parents, community leaders and young people together for conversations on menstrual health and hygiene*.

🩸 Girls received sanitary pads.
💬 Communities opened up conversations.
🤝 Parents and leaders joined the dialogue.
🌸 The UNFPA Menstrual Health and Hygiene Champion was launched.

UNFPA Representative @mosotiunfpa called on men and boys to support girls, reminding communities that menstruation is a natural part of life, not something to be ashamed of.

Every girl deserves the confidence to learn, participate and pursue her dreams without menstrual stigma standing in her way.

FROM LISTENING TO DELIVERY: PARTNERSHIPS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

When UNFPA brought CEOs and private-sector leaders to Mokhotlong, the goal was simple: come, listen and understand the realities facing communities.

They listened to young people. They visited health facilities. They met communities. They saw first-hand the challenges, from gender-based violence and teenage pregnancy to limited access to health services, technology and safe spaces for young people.

And then, they made commitments.

This week, those commitments are becoming reality.

Parkhomes. Computers. Hospital beds. Office furniture. Practical support that will strengthen the Child and Gender Protection Unit and Mapholaneng Health Centre, helping improve protection and health services for communities in Mokhotlong.

This is what partnership for impact looks like.

UNFPA brought partners together to listen.
They listened. They pledged. And now, they are delivering.

To the CEOs and private-sector partners who stepped forward, thank you for turning words into action and commitments into tangible change. 🙏🏾

Your support is helping create safer spaces, stronger services and greater opportunities for the people of Mokhotlong.

Because when government, the private sector, development partners and communities come together around a shared purpose, change does not remain a promise, it reaches people where they live.

Together, we are building a future where no one is left behind.

Investing in people is investing in Lesotho’s future.

On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 2026), the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Lesotho Rt Hon Sam Ntsokoane Matekane met with UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Diene Keita to strengthen collaboration on priorities central to the country’s sustainable development.

The discussions underscored the importance of advancing maternal health, the rights and wellbeing of women and girls, youth development, sexual and reproductive health and rights, the prevention of gender-based violence, and preparations for the 2026 National Census.

These priorities are deeply interconnected. A country cannot fully realise its development potential when women and girls face preventable barriers to health and opportunity, or when young people are unable to access the information, services and opportunities they need to shape their futures.

For UNFPA in Lesotho, partnerships with Government are essential to translating commitments into action and accelerating progress towards a healthier, more empowered and more inclusive society.

Together, we can advance policies and investments that put people at the centre of development.

Young people need more than hope. They need opportunities.

The scarcity of jobs and the need for stronger accountability were among the key issues discussed today during a meeting between UNFPA Representative to Lesotho, @mosotiunfpa and ILO Director for South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini and Lesotho, Mr Alexio Musindo.

Mr Mosoti highlighted UNFPA’s support for the revival of Youth Resource Centres across Lesotho, creating spaces where young people can access skills development, information, opportunities and support to help build their futures.

To young people across Lesotho:
Your ideas matter. Your skills matter. Your voice matters.

Seek opportunities. Build your skills. Connect. Speak up. Get involved.

Let’s turn youth potential into real opportunities for decent work, entrepreneurship and meaningful participation in Lesotho’s development.

The future belongs to young people, and investing in them is investing in Lesotho.

Plans that change lives start with listening to communities.

Today in Thaba-Tseka, child marriage and adolescent pregnancies were among the critical issues taking centre stage as District Administrators and District Economic Planners met to strengthen planning for Lesotho’s development.

At the meeting, Hon. ’Mamamello Holomo, MP for Thaba-Tseka, District Administrator Mr Tlali Mphafi, and UNFPA Representative to Lesotho Mr John Kennedy Mosoti highlighted the importance of turning development priorities into concrete, costed actions.

Mr Mosoti also stressed the urgent need to address Lesotho’s high maternal deaths and invest in young people, creating opportunities for them to unlock their talents, realise their potential and shape the future of their communities.

Better planning. Smarter investment. Stronger communities. A future where every young person can thrive.
