I just wanted a quick read and instead, got a quick heartbreak.

Grabe? Regret manifests. Regret lingers.
It’s always the “what if” that haunts the longest.

Ano yooooon? @ungazpress ? Mananakit tapos mambibitin? Hahaha

Anyway, this book made my quiet Saturday night feel eventful 😂

P.S. Required ba talaga sa lahat ng Filipino acquaintance party yung I Knew I Loved You because that part took me WAAAAY back.

SALOT by Ronaldo S. Vivo Jr., Ronnel S. Vivo & Erwin Dayrit, illustrated by Danell Arquero

What the hell did I just read? 😂

I got my copy of Salot as a prize during our book club’s @talkbookishtomeph visit to Sir Nal last August, and honestly, I didn’t expect this tiny graphic novel to take me on such a ride.

Salot is a hell of a ride. It starts so simply: a father and his daughter walking down the street, just an ordinary, mundane moment. And then suddenly, everything goes upside down.

That shift from everyday life into something much darker feels like such a signature of Sir Nal’s storytelling. He has this way of taking something mundane and familiar and crafting horrors that feel like they were hiding underneath it all along.

And then came the moment I realized that the mysterious guy who suddenly appeared between the father and daughter looked very familiar. I’m terrible with names, but I knew that face. He reminded me of the illustrated character from Ang Lahat ng Hayop sa Ating mga Yapak, and that realization made everything even more exciting.

I haven’t read the rest of the Dreamland Trilogy yet, aside from the English translation The Power Above Us All, but knowing that Salot exists within that same ecosystem made me want to finally dive into the rest of the series. It also makes me want to reread Ang Lahat ng Hayop sa Ating mga Yapak, especially after hearing how readers who have completed the Dreamland Trilogy pick up on the subtle hints and references scattered throughout it. I want to experience those connections for myself.

The graphic novel format also works so well here. Danell Arquero’s illustrations get especially graphic when the horror kicks in, and I loved that. The gore mirrors the brutality and horror of the story, making everything feel much more visceral.

And honestly? A lot happened in a 10-minute read. 😂

Salot may be short, but it packs enough horror, mystery, gore, and universe-building to leave you sitting there afterward thinking, What the hell did I just read?

P.S August Read ✨
